Hello Jan,
Thanks for using the add-on and raising the problem.
The minor bug showing itself in Linux is cleared and a new version uploaded, please update or delete/add the add-on and try using it again.

Roozbeh
Hello,
Thank you for new version, it works in Linux now.
- Is it possible to add some batch process in menu? This feature would help me to add the notes to many words at once.
- Is it possible to add the translation? For example when I translate from English to Germany, there will be also option to copy the German translation.
Thank you!
Hello Jan,
Thanks for the feedback and your suggestions, I hope you find the current version useful.
I have started working on the translation part and hopefully will add it in the next few days.
About the batch process, do you have an example among other existing add-ons? I want to have an idea about how it can work. Though I am a bit cautious about it because of the load it can put on the servers, but maybe we can manage it by adding delays to requests.
Thanks,
Roozbeh
Hello Roozbeh,
I am looking forward to the translation part.
I use “AwesomeTTS - Add speech to your flashcards” where you can select many cards in Browse mode and add pronunciation to them all at once.
Regards,
Jan
Hello Jan,
Thanks for the “like” and encouraging comment!
“Translation” is added, please check and tell me if there is an issue.
I will check the batch function ability; it might take a few days.

Roozbeh
Hello,
Thank you for adding translation!
I found these “errors”:
1 When I updated your add-on, I had doubled options in config. I solved this by deleting your add-on and reinstalled it.
2. It doesn’t matter when I change this option: “15-Add transliteration to translation?”: “No” - It always adds the transliteration.
3. It doesn’t matter when I change this option: “16-Overwrite translation?”: “No” - It never overwrites the content of the back button.
Best regards,
Jan
Hello Jan,
Thanks for the feedback!
About the issues:
1- I will check it, though since it might show once in every update, can be a bit difficult to find.
2&3- I just checked and they seem working. Have you restarted (close & reopen) Anki after changing the config? It should be done now, but I’ll check whether there is a way to change the way config is read so that it won’t need reloading.
I’d be grateful if you check to reload and confirm.
Thanks,
Roozbeh
Hello,
- config file - It’s OK after reload Anki, there are no duplicities.
- I have this settings: “15-Add transliteration to translation?”: “No”, but the output looks like this: Czech translation: drahý
- After reloading Anki the problem with overwriting for transaltion option is OK (When it is Yes, it overwrites the back content of the card)
Regards,
Jan
Hello Jan,
Thanks for the feedback.
1&3- I’m glad! Just there is another update for “hot” Config change (no need to restart Anki for Config to take effect after this update) and you need to restart Anki after installation, just once this time. Then you can change the Config any time and it immediately takes effect without restart.
2- Please distinguish between translation and transLITERation. It seems that Google adds the latter to non-Latin-alphabet languages like Russian and Arabic only, so for Czech, it’s not available and has no impact. Currently, if you don’t want to add a translation, just don’t push the T button or disable the button in the Config.
For example for Russian not adding vs. adding transliteration will work as below:
word: pizza
Russian translation: пицца
Russian translation: пицца (pitstsa)
PS: I doubted between using transliteration or transcription for this extra part, after some search, I found that transliteration might be more accurate.
Regards,
Roozbeh
Hello Roozbeh,
Thank you for your explanation of translation and transliteration, I have no idea what transliteration is .
I would like to ask you if it is possinle to add option for transaltion to not add the part about the language - maybe the example is better:
Instead of this:
Russian translation: пицца
Have this:
пицца
The part about language into which is translated is not important for me.
Best regards,
Jan
Would it be possible to implement this idea? Even as separate add-on would be great.
Hi Roozbeh,
Thank you for taking the time to make this wonderful, and very helpful add-on!
This add-on has great potential and I have some suggestions that could take it to the next level!
- Design upgrade.
- The ideal design for when generating definitions would include:
- An option to choose the maximum number of similar/opposite words shown. If set to 0, that section will note be displayed. Having 30 synonyms is unnecessary and distracting. 5-10 is much more suitable for vocab flashcards.
- For similar and opposite sections, terms should be separated by a vertical bar instead of a comma. Specifically, two terms should be separated by two spaces, followed by a vertical bar, followed by two more spaces. I’ve tested various options and this is definitely the best format for reading and processing the visual information easily and efficiently.
- Term and definitions should have a large font size. Other sections, like part of speech, example sentence, similar words, and opposite words in smaller text.
- Option to have centered text
- Part of speech moved to the line after the definition rather than the line before. This helps focus attention on what is most important.
- Color coded sections
- Part of speech in light blue
- Example sentence in blue
- Similar words in green
- Opposite words in red
- Section names “Example”, “Similar”, and “Opposite” should be in light gray so as not to distract.
- The ideal design for when generating definitions would include:
Here is an example:
Looks amazing, right? I think a google definitions add-on like this could easily become one of the top add-ons for anki.
With this format, studying new vocab words would become much easier and more exciting. I, and many others would be so happy if you could make this happen! Please let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Jord
I suggest strip all formatting and separate all different elements into separate fields, so that users can format them themselves.
It would limit database size, which is important for some users that use online sync and it gives more customization options for users.
The issue with that is, for many words there are several definitions. For each definition you would need multiple fields. You’d need 30 or more fields for some words.
On top of that, even if you configure the settings for each field, it won’t always align properly when generating a definition. This is because some definitions don’t have opposite words, and sub definitions have neither synonyms or antonyms.
I think it’d be better to just have more customization options in the add-on’s config.
Hello Jan,
Sorry for the delay in the response, I was busy with other tasks these days. I have addressed your concern in the coming version, it has a flexible “title” and you can choose to leave it blank.
Hopefully, it will be released soon. Thanks for your patience and feedback.
Keep in touch,
Roozbeh
Hello Jord,
Sorry for the delay in the response, I was busy with other tasks these days.
Thanks a lot for using the add-on, the encouragements and for providing me with your detailed and invaluable feedback.
About your suggestions:
An option to choose the maximum number of similar/opposite words shown. If set to 0, that section will note be displayed. Having 30 synonyms is unnecessary and distracting. 5-10 is much more suitable for vocab flashcards.
I will try to consider it in the next versions. In the coming version, we will just have the option to show/not show specific definition elements (including synonyms and antonyms).
For similar and opposite sections, terms should be separated by a vertical bar instead of a comma. Specifically, two terms should be separated by two spaces, followed by a vertical bar, followed by two more spaces. I’ve tested various options and this is definitely the best format for reading and processing the visual information easily and efficiently.
Good suggestion, the coming version will have the capability of customized “separators”. It can be ", " like it is now or " | " or any other combination.
Term and definitions should have a large font size. Other sections, like part of speech, example sentence, similar words, and opposite words in smaller text.
&
Option to have centered text
I will try to consider it in the next versions.
Part of speech moved to the line after the definition rather than the line before. This helps focus attention on what is most important.
I have followed Google’s convention and frankly, to me it makes sense to stay as it is. I will try to make the definition elements sequence customizable in the next versions, but till then you can change its colour to make it less in sight.
Color coded sections
Good suggestion, in the coming version the colours would be customizable.

Roozbeh
Putting a lot on information into one card is counterproductive. You are not supposed to read your card like a long dictionary entry or an article. Studying in Anki should not replace using a dictionary.
More fields allow to create many cards based on the same note.
The real advantage that such add-on could give would be to create card in bulk in a relatively fast way. Combined with other add-ons it can be really useful.
It all comes down to how you create your template to make learning process effective.
My typical English language card is:
English definition or meaning
Native definition or meaning
Part of speech
English sentence with cloze
I try to guess the word or phrase in cloze.
One meaning, one sentence for one card. And as many sentences and cards for a given word as possible.
Looking at one card when reviewing takes me about a second or two. So Anki is for remembering.
For in depth studying of words I often read dictionaries or take notes in notebook.
To gnomek and Jord:
Thanks for the useful discussion.
In fact, I had received a suggestion to add the capability of inserting different definition elements in different Anki fields and I have started working on that. It seems that some Anki users have already set up their notes in this format and having this capability will make them able to use this add-on effectively with their used-to settings.
Jord’s comments are also correct, a word can have several meanings and not all of them have all the elements and even if they have, separating the elements in the fields for several meanings does not make sense and does not seem useful.
As a result, I came to this conclusion:
- First meaning can be important as gnomek said, and for the same reason, a separate button was defined for that in the add-on. For this First Meaning, the [optional] dividing between fields capability seems reasonable.
- For the All Meanings, I agree with Jord and though separation is possible, it does not make sense.
This setup will be used in the coming version. It will be flexible even for the First Meaning, that is one can choose to break the elements in different fields or keep all the elements together in one field.
I guess we are moving in the direction that finally, the config file will provide a good amount of customization and perhaps it makes sense to have a few “commonly used templates” or a similar concept. On the downside having many items in the config can be disturbing after the updates.

Roozbeh
