Type in answers cards turn up blank

All of my Basic (type in the answer) cards have turned blank on the back overnight and won’t even let me type in the answer. They appear like the Basic cards, but don’t even have the answer on the back of them.

I have tried to turn them into Basic cards and back into the Basic (type in the answer) cards, but that doesn’t seem to work either. I disabled all my addons and followed the basic troubleshooting steps. I have tried to create a new deck where I just make a new card like this from scratch, and it still doesn’t let me type anything in and the back turns up blank.

I’m out of ideas at this point, what can I do?

It sounds like something changed in your card templates. If you know what you changed, you should change it back – or you can ask for help to find the problem in the specific area of your template you were editing.

If that doesn’t work, or you’d lose too much data (other edits, review history, etc.) doing that, you should make a new version of that default note type, and switch your notes to use that. [Make sure your devices are in sync before you start this.]

  • Change the name of your current note type to add “broken” to it – Manage Note Types > Rename.
  • Make a new note type – Manage Note Types > Add > "Add: Basic (type in the answer)".
  • Select the cards/notes that use your “broken” note type – Notes > Change Note Type. (Make sure the fields and cards are mapped correctly.)
  • Get rid of the “broken” note type so you don’t use it again – Manage Note Types > Delete.
