Using shared deck, “Ultimate Geography” on Windows 11. I added a pronunciation deck, with the help of a website that listed countries and their capitals as well as the pronunciations for each. That worked fine but this website had some inaccuracies that I had to correct. I used Google Pronounce source mp3 files to replace my inaccurate sound fields. These sound fields play at extremely low volume. These same mp3 source files play just fine outside Anki. I checked the Anki volume controls as well as those on my computer and so far I’ve not solved the problem of low sound volume. Any ideas?
Are the old files and the new files both showing up in your notes as standard sound tags – [sound:...]
? Or is one or both of the sets of files doing something different?
Old and new sound files reside in the same folder, /Documents/Sound recordings. All my sound files are MP3. Old files come from:
List of national capitals - Wikipedia. New files come from Forvo or Google.Pronounce. I acquired all the files by downloading source data links to my Sound Recording folder. All of these sound files play fine using my computer media player. But the Forno files and the Google Pronounce files play very weakly from an Anki field. I’m using Version 24.06.2 (33a92379) Python 3.9.18 Qt 6.6.2 PyQt 6.6.1.
No, the ones that Anki is using are not in that folder. Anki makes its own copies for your collection. While they should be exact duplicates, if you want to compare the files in an outside app, you should make sure you’re looking at the ones in your collection.media folder. Managing Files - Anki Manual
But my question was about how the files are attached to your notes. Is it a standard sound tag, like [sound:709737.mp3]
, or are you using some other syntax to play them, like html audio tags, remote media, etc.?
They’re standard sound tags, eg. [sound:709737.mp3].
Then yes, you shouldn’t be seeing different inside/outside behavior between files.
I download native speaker audio from Forvo regularly, and I haven’t seen any issues with the same file playing at the same volume levels inside and outside Anki. However, in my language, are plenty of files on Forvo that are at a low volume and I need to amplify them when I am cleaning them up.
Example of a file I did recently
What app are you using outside of Anki to compare to volume? Is it possible that app is “helping” to amplify/normalize the audio, and Anki is playing it at its true volume?
My browser is Google, so I assume Google Play is the only app involved. All the sounds I’ve mentioned are produced while I’m in Google, including Anki.
I don’t know what Google Chrome might be doing to normalize volume. But I was asking about this –
What app was that? If it’s a standalone audio playing app that gives you access to those sorts of controls, you can compare to that – but make sure you’re playing the exact same file that Anki has access to – the one in your collection.media folder.
