Separate forward /reverse study sessions

Goal: shared language Note base for separate forward and reverse study sessions. I followed the below instruction, but changes/additions made in one session do not appear to show up on the other session. How do I get separate reversed sessions that share the same modified data?

“Assuming your Cards Types are Card 1 (Front>Reverse) and Card 2 (Reverse>Front):

  1. If you have all your cards in say, Deck1, create a new deck, Deck2. Forget about notes, we are going to move the cards.

  2. Browser, search for "deck:Deck1" card:2

  3. Edit > Select all

  4. Cards > Change Deck

  5. Select Deck2 > Move cards

Done. Now your Card1 cards will be on Deck1 and all your Card2 cards will be on Deck2, and you will see the same notes on both decks.”

If your 2 cards are made from the same note, it doesn’t matter what decks you put those cards in. When you edit the note, the cards will still be updated. The instructions that you quoted are correct (except for the suggestion that you could move notes if you wanted to – because you can’t).

I’m not sure what you mean by “session.” Take a look at the Key Concepts page I linked above and see if you can come up with a more precise word for what you mean.

Danika, Thank you. By session, I mean a study period when I do just German to English, or just English to German. I used the instructions to create a two decks. One deck has 5 E-to-G cards (verb card, noun card, etc. with appropriate fields); the other deck has only one card for G-to-E (all parts pf speech). During a G-to-E period, I added a verb. It displayed all fields in the Note layout, and it shows up as a card in that deck. However, it does not show up as a card in the other deck. Edits to cards from that session do appear to display on cards in both decks.

So it appears that cards from either deck can edit existing Notes, with the result appearing in both decks. However, apparently new cards added in one deck do not generate a new card in the other deck. Is there a way to generate the new cards in the other deck as well? Or is there another way to do my separate sessions that share the same Note data, including edits and additions in either deck?

I started with a basic type deck that customized and Ihave about 900 Notes, but if some sort of export/card re-make is necessary, please tell me.Your willingness to help this Anki-newbie is greatly appreciated. Michael

Correct. Each card comes from a note, but multiple cards can come from (and so share) each note.

You can move cards between decks in the Browser right after you make the new note, as you quoted in your original post. Or, if you already have a note with its cards split between decks as you like:

  1. Open Browse
  2. Find that separated note in “Notes” view
  3. Right-click → Create Copy (Ctrl-Alt-E)
  4. Edit the material for the new note into the editor window that pops up
  5. Save the new note. It should have cards in various decks like the note it was copied from.

You may need to apply this:

  • The Deck Override option allows you to change the deck that cards generated from the current card type will be placed into. By default, cards are placed into the deck you provide in the Add Notes window. If you set a deck here, that card type will be placed into the deck you specified, instead of the deck listed in the Add Notes window. This can be useful if you want to separate cards into different decks (for instance, when studying a language, to put production cards in one deck and recognition cards in another). You can check which deck the cards are currently going to by choosing Deck Override again.

But creating copies of a note (as suggested above) is not always a good idea, since if there is an error in one note, you will have to search for all similar ones and change them.
