Not showing images when exporting privately

Dear Community,

I have already searched the forum for this topic, found some articles but none of them worked for me. I am part of a study group and we need to learn an enormous amount of knowledge. The point is: since there is no private way to share one big deck of cards, we began to write a deck for every lesson so that everyone can include the new cards into their own structure.

So far so good. Now if we put Images in the question part of an anki card of type easy, we can see them by ourselves. There is no problem. I can see the cards in Anki web, they’re all there, fully synchronized. BUT If I share the deck with my mates, (because they need them too) the problems begin. Some of them use the apple version if anki, others use the windows- or the android version. I personally generate my cards on my tablet on ankidroid.

When I export the decks, I get usually very small file sizes. That’s my first clue to know that the pictures are’nt there. If i share these Decks, my mates can sometimes see some of the pictures but never all of them. Mostly they don’t get any pictures.

What is wrong here? What did I wrong? How can we solve this problem because it’s absolutely mandatory to have these pictures in the cards…

There is no option to make the cards public.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Are you exporting your deck as an APKG file? Are you selecting include media?

  • Are your images attached to your notes “the usual” way? If you click < > above the field with the images, you’ll see the underlying HTML. Is the src a local filename, or a url/link to a remote file?

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I am exporting the deck as apkg file. I also alsways check include media. I checked twice and the link to the image refers to a local file as src=local_stored_file.jpg
I do attach the files via the paperclip button, like usual.

That information helps! If the images aren’t being gathered together properly in the export, that’s a sign that there’s something about the images that is keeping Anki from identifying them.

Are you using Anki 24.11 / AnkiDroid 2.20? You said you’re creating the exports on AnkiDroid, right?

  • Does it happen the same way (i.e. same images missing) every time you export that particular deck?
  • Does the same thing happen with the same deck if you export it from desktop Anki instead?
  • When it happens, are all of the images missing in a deck, or just some of them?

Do you run Tools > Check Media regularly (or ever) on your collection?

  • Can you run that now? (I’d recommend doing this on desktop, just because it’s easier to work with, and you can look at your collection.media folder at the same time more easily.)
  • What does it say for missing and unused files?
  • [Please don’t click “Delete unused media” while we’re checking on this. If one of my theories checks out, then you might end up deleting things you want.]

Yes, I’m using Anki 2.20.1 on Android and the latest version on windows.
Yes, I’m creating the exports on android. I do also always wait to syncronize all media first before exporting.
It always happens the same way.

I have a structure like this:

Top Structure entry point

  • 00 subdirectory 0
  • 00 01 Structure point 01 in subdirectory 0
  • 01 subdirectory 1
  • 01 01 Structure point 01 in subdirectory 1
  • 01 02 Structure point 01 in subdirectory 1

When it happens, (most of the time) there are missing all but 1 or two images. I I use image occlusion, the image is always there!

Running check media says: Files in media folder, that are unused: 730
Files used from cards, that miss in media folder: 7

Can you point us to a specific card in your collection that shows media when reviewed locally, and fails to show media when exported+imported? We can then try to reproduce the problem.

Sorry for my late reply. I was busy. I can’t export you my anki cards. Some of the concerned cards are not meant for the public.

But I may have found out, what may cause the error: especially the pictures with spaces in the original filename produce unexpected behaviour. After changing the filenames to “1.jpg” “2.jpg” and so on it suddenly worked.

there’s another funny thing… All of the “unused media” from my older post are actually used and visible in my cards. So anki says they’re unused, but in reality all images are in their respective cards. I double checked that.

Is that also because of misnaming? Do those ones show up as both “missing” and “unused” with slightly different filenames?

To this question: Yes but not all. Sometimes it happens.

We have now found out that it has to do with spaces in the naming of the files. Everytime I import pictures with spaces ist’s ok for me. But as soon as I export them, noone can see the images. It has to do with the Spaces because after making new cards with images, that have no spaces in their filenames it works all perfectly.
