New cards not showing in "new" column

I’ve been adding new cards lately. In the “Browse” view for the deck, they do show up in the “Due” column as “New #XXXX” and so on.

But they are not showing up in the “New” column in the app’s “Decks”, view. I am not sure how long this has been going on, tho it seems to me it’s at least the last month or so. (I just upgraded to 25.02.7 today to see if that would help, but this behavoir started well before that upgrade…)

When I use “Custom Study” to increase the current day’s “new cards” limit, I am served not new cards but (apparently) random older cards.

The new cards aren’t backed up very far, so it seems more than likely that the new cards do get shuffled into the reviews stream eventually – just never showing up as “new”. I’ll have to look at this more closely. I’ve made a note, and will follow up in a few days. (Otherwise, behavior seems reasonable…)

I have run Check Db a few times. No joy.

I see this using Anki desktop 25.02.7 under Ubuntu 24.04.

I also use Anki mobile (25.02.2) on a 7g iTouch (iOS 15.8.4 – OS can’t be upgraded, eol for the device). And I’ve been seeing the same behaviors there.

(Have I perhaps managed to confuse the db somewhere along the way? I do sync from both environments to anki’s server? Or did I miss a memo

As I don’t see any notes in the forum from users with a similar problem, I suspect it’s something peculiar to myself – this db has been in use for better than 10 years. So.

Not a big deal, really, but if you have any suggestions…

Thanks.

What is your “New cards/day” limit for this deck, and have you already reached it at the time you are adding the new cards? The “New” column will only show a count of new cards that are ready to review today, so it is always zero if you are at the daily limit.

By “older cards” do you mean cards that you have previously studied? Or cards that were added a while ago but not yet studied/reviewed?

It sounds like you have a low daily maximum review limit that you’re hitting, so that is (1) hiding some number of due Review cards from you, and (2) preventing any New cards from being introduced because you have no room in your daily limit.

Your daily max limit should ideally be high enough that you see all due (and overdue) Review cards every day. Deck Options - Anki Manual

Thanks for you thoughts. The deck has a non-zero “New cards/day” for
preset, this deck, today only. The problem seems to be what
Danika_Dakika pointed out: no new cards will be shown if the number of
cards waiting to be reviewed exceeds the “Maximum reviews/day” (and “New
cards ignore review limit” is off).

Again, thanks for your time.

Cheers.

Thank you. I think you’ve nailed it.

No new cards will be shown if the number of cards waiting to be reviewed
exceeds the “Maximum reviews/day” (and “New cards ignore review limit”
is off).

If I toggle on “New cards ignore review limit”, I do hit what seems
like a wrinkle: the “New cards/day” setting is ignored, and all
available new cards end up in the “new” column and expect to be reviewed
today, in this case 19 cards (even tho “New cards/day” setting is 5 for
preset, this deck, today only).

(Fwiw, as I’m looking at this, I’ve already been through “Max
reviews/day”. So new cards really isn’t paying any attention to the
review limit while “ignore review limit” is on.)

Optimally, then, I need to get to a place where, as you say, the number
of reviews + the specified number of new cards for the day <= Maximum
reviews/day.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. Very helpful. I can
work with this.

Cheers.
