Network timeout!

Hello everyone,

I am having a problem with Anki on my Windows laptop and I would really appreciate some help.

I downloaded and installed the latest official version of Anki from the official website. I also checked and configured the Windows Firewall settings completely and allowed Anki through the firewall.

The strange thing is that Anki works perfectly on my phone using the exact same network and internet connection. I can log in and sync without any problems on my phone.

However, on my Windows laptop, Anki gives me a “Connection timed out” error whenever I try to log in or sync.

I have already tried:

  • Reinstalling Anki multiple times

  • Downloading the latest version again

  • Checking firewall settings

  • Restarting the system

But the problem still is not fixed.

I am not sure what else I should try. If anyone has experienced a similar issue before, or knows how to fix it, I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you very much.

Did you upgrade from an earlier version, or was this a fresh install on this device?

That’s usually a good sign that it’s something on your device interferring with the connection.

Does this “timeout” happen immediately when you try to sync, or does it happen after a few minutes?

Thank you so much for your response. I honestly did not expect such a quick reply.

Yes, the timeout usually happens after about 5 to 10 seconds.

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Anki multiple times, along with many other troubleshooting steps, but unfortunately I still cannot log into my account or sync successfully.

And this?

That timing sounds more like a failure to connect than a real timeout, so check anything on your device that is related to connecting to the internet – Error establishing a secure connection when syncing - Anki FAQs . There might be other things besides just Windows Firewall.

The error might also be caused by your internet provider if it tries to filter internet traffic in any way. Using suitable vpn can help in solving this kind of issue.

Thank you again for your help.

I should also mention that I live in Iran, where internet access and filtering restrictions can sometimes interfere.

Currently, I access the internet on my laptop through my phone’s mobile connection. My phone itself is connected using a proxy/VPN configuration, and I was sharing that connection to my Windows laptop using Every Proxy and hotspot tethering.

In that case, the restrictions sound even more like the root cause.

I would suggest trying every alternative connection option available to you. Unfortunately, there too many unknowns in each individual case to propose any specific recommendation. Even though the successful connection from your phone is a good sign, it does not guarantee that the same network will work for connecting the laptop, since OS differences apply.

Also, if I remember correctly, the internet shared from an android device via either hotspot or usb-tethering does not go through the vpn layer by default. I tried that long ago however, so things might have changed since then. But you still might want to try installing a vpn directly on your windows device.
