I use Anki both on a laptop and my iPhone. I am moving from my Windows laptop to a MacBook Pro. To set up the computer version of Anki on my new MacBook, I believe I download the Anki program onto my MacBook and then sync my decks, so there is no need to copy and transfer anything from the hard drive of my Windows laptop. Is this right? Thanks.
That’s true as far as your collection (notes, cards, decks, options, review history), but it won’t copy over the rest of your app settings or your add-ons and their configs.
You might try copying your Anki2 folder from one system to the other – Managing Files - Anki Manual. I know this works with Windows-to-Windows, so I think it should work on a Mac too. That may also shortcut the first-time sync of all of your data.
If you try this, it’s a good idea to install the same version of desktop Anki as you had on your old computer. That will give you a chance to check for add-on compatability before you upgrade to the most recent release.
Thanks for relying. I’m not using any add-ons. Could you give me examples of the sorts of app settings you’re thinking about? Perhaps the easier route is not to bother trying to move them, but instead to change settings as I find that something is not set how I want it.
It would include all of your add-ons and their configs, but if you’re not concerned about that, it’s fine to just start fresh.
All of your Deck Options will be included when you sync your collection. Some of your Preferences will be, and the rest you can set manually.
The other thing you’ll lose are you automatic backups. But you’ll start accumulating those pretty quickly in the new install.
To save yourself time syncing your media, before you change over, it would be good to run a Check Media to delete unused media and then sync those changes to AnkiWeb.
