the additional fields in the Image Occlusion creator are quite difficult to find - one needs to click a button whose function is not immediately clear from the design, and that is labeled with the not immediately obvious “toggle mask editor”.
having this button makes sense while you’re in the mask editing phase (and it’s meaning is also slightly more clear), but why is it there beforehand? this is what Image Occlusion looks like before having selected an image:
there’s a lot of empty real estate that could have been used by the additional fields. for comparison, this is how AnkiDroid does this:
instead of the default being the pre-mask editor view with a lot of empty space, AnkiDroid utilises the fact you need to select the image anyway, and combines that into the additional fields view. getting to the mask editor is still the same number of steps away, but the additional fields are that much easier to get to.
i know for a fact this is unintuitive to many, because i got to this topic after someone asked me how to add tags to Image Occlusion, a question i didn’t know the answer to (i used the trick of adding the tag to a non-IO card, then switching to IO). we found the toggle via posts in this very forum of people similarly not knowing how to get to the additional fields view:
the fact there are two independent posts on this forum about this (which are now indexed by search engines and so people can now find the solution) suggests this is unintuitive. and since i don’t see a downside to the AnkiDroid approach (as mentioned, it’s the same number of steps to get to the actual mask editor), i think it’s just bad design.
there’s no need to change the actual mask editor. i understand why there it’s a small toggle to not interrupt with the mask making. but i see literally no negatives to revealing all the fields in the pre-mask editor view.
