Improve onboarding experience

When getting started for the first time with the Anki app, and every time I create a new deck, I get this screen:

Congratulations! You have finished this deck for now.

To study outside of the normal schedule, you can use
Custom Study.

This is very confusing to a new user, and sets an expectation that the app will be confusing and technical to use.

it’s confusing because

  • the user hasn’t finished anything
  • it introduces advanced topics like custom study
  • it doesn’t suggest the best next action - Add.

expected:

An empty deck should show a different message

Congratulations! You have created a new deck

To add cards, hit “Add”

Special-casing the empty deck case is not a bad idea, though it may lead to a confusing message if the deck is not new, and simply has had all its cards removed.

Custom study is shown on that screen because there are many people - especially when they’re new to Anki - who don’t want to stop after they’ve reviewed the material once.

Agreed, Custom study is super valuable for the person who just wants to keep on studying, even if they are just getting started.

In the case of the empty deck, though, it’s not very valuable.

I take your point about a deck that has become empty rather than being new:

This deck is empty.

To get started studying, creating some cards:
