I am sorry but I am having trouble with a basic feature. I have ~600 cards in about 7 decks. I have started using the app and it is really great. However, it appears that my review so far is only pulling cards from the first couple decks (those decks show zero “new” cards).
How do I change the setting so it draws from each deck in order? In other words, I would like a mix of cards from all of my decks. Thank you.
Also if anyone has any suggestions on how to optimize my settings for this much material, I would appreciate it. It is fairly dense legal stuff. Thank you!!
Yes, there’s a way to fix this, but before I send you down a wrong path – it would help to know how your ~7 decks are arranged in relation to each other.
Are they all at the same “level,” or are some of them nested inside other decks? Or even are all of them nested under a “parent” deck? Is there one particular deck that you click on to study, or do you click on different decks to study different things?
Thank you for your reply. There was one “parent” deck and several sub decks (see screenshot). Since I want to answer a mixture of questions from all topics I have been clicking on the parent deck but I believe it is mainly drawing from the first few decks.
Yes, that’s right, but there are a couple of ways you can change that. At a high level (and let me know what you want more detail about) –
Change the New card gather order for the parent deck – Deck Options - Anki Manual . I suspect it’s currently set to “Deck.” Depending on how your cards are arranged relative to each other in your New-“queue,” it might be enough to change it to “Ascending” or “Descending” – but in some collections that ends up looking pretty much the same as “Deck.” One option in that case is to rearrange your New-queue to shuffle the cards from all (or some) subdecks together, while leaving them all in their separate subdecks (and I can explain more if you want that).
Control the daily New cards from the subdecks – The Anki v3 scheduler - Frequently Asked Questions . This is a bit less random, but you can set “this deck” New card limits on the subdecks, so that each will only let a certain number of New cards through to the parent deck. This is especially useful if you have bigger/smaller decks and you want to control the pace at which you move through them.
Get all of the cards in view in the Browse window – deck:*
Select all
Cards > Reposition – start 0, step 1, Randomize order
That will keep multiple cards of the same note together, but otherwise, it will be like you shuffled everything. Then you can choose “Ascending” and the parent deck will give you cards from whatever note happens to be next in line.
However, there are more refined ways to do this –
If you want the New cards from a specific subdeck to stay in the order they are in now
If you want the TCDLA subdecks to stay in order relative to each other
