Help Needed: Creating Flashcards with Voice in Anki (English to Spanish)

Hello everyone,

I’m a first-time Anki user, starting with the desktop version. Despite watching numerous YouTube tutorials, I’m still struggling to create basic flashcards with voice. I’m learning Spanish and want to start with specific words I need to learn.

Here’s what I’m trying to achieve:

  1. Create a flashcard with English on the front and Spanish on the back.
  2. Have Anki voice the front of the card in English and the back in Spanish.
  3. Use these flashcards on the go, ideally with a repeating loop.

Example:

  • Front of the card: “Think” (English)
  • Back of the card: “Grueso” (Spanish)

I’ve added HyperTTS and am using the Audio Collection Option but am having trouble:

  • Is there a way for Anki to automatically translate English to Spanish, or do I need to do the translation manually (which I’ve done so far)?
  • With HyperTTS, I can only get it to add audio to either the front or the back of the card. I want the front in English and the back in Spanish.
  • I’ve tried setting the Source to “Simple” and the Source Field to “Front” and “Back” separately, but it’s not working as intended.

Maybe I’m approaching this wrong, or there’s a better method I haven’t discovered.

Can someone guide me on how to set this up or point me to a clear resource?

Thank you!

Create two separate fields audio_en and audio_es and let HyperTTS add the sound files there. Source for these audio fields is the respective vocabulary field for English or Spanish. Place the fields on the front and/or back of the card as you like.

There are add-ons for automatic translation, I wouldn’t rely on it.

I finally got the front and back to have audio and went into the audio folder and renamed and clean the folder up.

But I still have to hit show answer and then again to go to the next flashcard.

So now trying to get this thing to auto advance and repeat automatically.

That way when I am in a car I just start it and it keeps going automatically.

You’ll be able to sync your collection through AnkiWeb to a mobile device (you can find the iOS and Android apps on the main site.

If you mean just “playing” the cards while you do other things – that’s not good practice, and please do not try to do this while you’re driving. Learning requires your attention, just like driving does. You’re still going to need to interact with the cards, grading your answers as you go. (The ways to get around that aren’t a good fit for a beginner to Anki.)

As far as a repeating loop – make sure you understand what spaced repetition is. Anki’s purpose is to help you avoid wasting time doing extra reviews of the material. So repeating cards over and over isn’t necessary, isn’t advised, and isn’t a good fit with Anki’s basic functionality.

No. There are different ways to get the information you want into notes in Anki, but you’ll need to provide the information.

For collection audio in HyperTTS, you need to setup a Source field (the word) and a Target field (where the audio file will be attached) for EACH field you want to record TTS audio for. The HyperTTS tutorial does a good job of explaining all that, including how to update your templates with a new Field Replacement for the audio.

I got the audio to work, but I cannot get it to automatically advance to the back of the card and then to the next card. I know what works for me and that is what I am trying to get this program to do. I don’t want to grade my answer, especially every time. Sorry, but I am looking for answers, not German studies or driving advice.

I finally found, under the Deck section, the gearbox settings and the option tab. I have tried almost every option there is and this thing still will not advance without me hitting the answer button.

And I cannot find a single YouTube video or article that shows how to set those settings for this thing will actually automatically advance. I set the seconds to show question for 1.0 and Seconds to show Answers to 1.0 and yet does not advance automatically.

I do not know if there is some other mysterious button that needs to be set.

Is there no tutorial on how to use this feature where they go step by step.

It should not be so hard to make a flashcard that automatically advances from the front card to the back and goes through the entire deck automatically. And be extra nice if it could repeat. Without hitting any other buttons.

I think I finally got this thing to work. You have to go into the more options and also set auto advance there and it repeats if you don’t bury the cards.

Now I just got to figure out how to transfer this to my cell phone

Yes, you do have to turn it on. You’ll have to turn it on when you want to use it in your mobile app as well. (And turn it off when you want it to stop.)

I understand you don’t want my advice, but for the next user who is looking for the directions for using this feature – they are in the manual. Deck Options - Anki Manual

I’ve finally created an Anki deck on my computer, but I’m having trouble syncing it to the Anki Pro app on my Android phone. I can see the deck on AnkiWeb, but it’s missing some features like audio. However, I can’t find a sync button in the Anki Pro app on my phone, despite following instructions that suggest there should be one.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
• Hit the sync button on the Anki Computer Version and I can see the deck on my phone AnkiWeb website.
• On my phone at the AnkiWeb, when I select the deck “My Spanish Words,” and hit the Actions and share; it gives an error message saying, “the default deck can’t be shared and suggests moving the cards to a new deck on the computer.” I don’t understand why it is calling it the default deck. I changed the name of the Deck to, “My Spanish Words”. Is there some other type of deck???

Does this feature not work for Android Phones? Is there something I’m missing or another method to sync my deck? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I think I finally figured this thing out. Apparently Anki Pro is something else and I needed Anki Droid.

That’s correct. The link in my first response is where you’ll find all of the legitimate versions of Anki.

Even if you rename the Default deck, it retains some of the special characteristics of the Default deck. You should create a new deck, and use “Change Deck” to move your cards to it. Then the Default deck will hide itself, and you’ll never have to think about it again.

You have been very helpful. Created a new study deck. And changed deck. New Problem. There seems to be 2 card categories New and Learning and it only goes through my Learning Cards and not through the new ones I added. I selected browse then selected all the cards then Cards Menu and Reset and still not work. How do you get it to go through all the cards. I went into Options and did not see anything obvious.

Make sure you starting from a place of understanding how studying works in Anki – Studying - Anki Manual – and why you won’t see all of your cards every day – Anki's not showing me all my cards! - Frequently Asked Questions . From your description I’m not totally sure whether something unexpected is happening or you’re still getting acclimated to spaced repetition.

That resets the cards you are studying to the New state, wiping away your review history, and making you start over from scratch. So I think that’s probably not what you’re looking for.
