Okay I will keep an eye on it this week and let you know if it fixes itself/if my new cards added after the messing around on 3/7 are fine and progressing properly or if they also have the same issue and would indicate a larger problem. I appreciate your help
Going backward in learning steps instead of graduating [Intervals changed without changing settings]
Here is a good example of a card that has been added since I messed with the number of intervals on 3/7. The only change I made was switching my first learning step from 1 day to 3 days because I don’t have time to see all of my learning cards every day while I figure this out. But I’ve clicked “good” twice, so based on my understanding my “good” this time should be my graduating interval (5 days), but it is still stuck in learning. Do you still think it will resolve or is there something bigger that I have to address if now even the new cards I am adding are not graduating/progressing through the learning steps? Thank you
Actually it may be progressing. These intervals are 1d 3d 3d 10d and on a first pass they were 1d 2d 3d 10d. I flagged it to see what happens in 3 days and will keep you updated.
Making more modifications to your learning steps will continue to impact cards that are in Learn. Have you taken a headcount of how many cards you have in Learn (is:learn
for learning and relearing, or is:learn -is:review
for learning alone)? I suspect it’s a lot, because of the number and length of your learning steps, and your particular study process.
I know that you think this will never get better, so you want to watch it closely to make sure it gets better. But this is one of those things where the more you focus on it, the more you want to tweak your steps – and every time you tweak your steps you cause it to keep happening!
You should lock in the learning steps you want to use at the end of all this (the ones we DM’d about or others – just settle on something), and then stop changing them. For all of the cards that are in Learn when you make that final change to your learning steps – you will need to –
- Study them through mixed up steps to get to graduation
- Reset them to the 1st step with Again
- Forget them back to New (so you can reintroduce them)
- Manually “graduate” them to Review using Set Due Date – for a graduating interval of 5, use
5!
#1 appears to be driving you crazy, so let’s set that aside for the moment! #2 and #3 (as dae suggested) will work, but there are things to consider. Let’s start with #4.
Find all of the cards that you want to have graduated already (i.e. you tried to graduate them, but they stayed in Learn). Start with the is:learn -is:review
search from above, add to that something like prop:reps>=6 rated:3:3
[6 or more reviews, rated 3 in the past 3 days], and adjust as needed (fewer reps? more days?). Are these all cards that should have graduated? Then --Select All, Set Due Date 5!
[due in 5 days, interval 5]. If there are so many of them that you need to scatter them over a few due dates, follow that up with something like – Set Due Date 2-5
[due in 2-5 days, but doesn’t change the interval]. That takes care of the high end. How many are left in Learn?
What about cards you introduced today or yesterday or day-before? Maybe those are good candidates for #3, to reset to New? Start with the is:learn -is:review
search from above, add to that something like introduced:3
[introduced in the past 3 days, including today], or prop:reps<=2
[2 or fewer reviews], and adjust as needed. Then – Select All, Forget (restore position, reset counts). If you want to make sure they are at the front of your queue to be introduced (and you’re introducing cards in an “Ascending” order), follow that up with “Reposition” starting at 0
. Now, how many are left in Learn?
This is the EXACT problem I am having. To the tee. It was refreshing to read through this and at least know I am not the only one. I hope you are able to get it solved @dsvarney99!
Thank you very very much!
