Garbled text (question mark in box) while entering text in new cards

When I try to add a new card, every character that I type in appears as a question mark surrounded by a box. Clicking on the <> on the upper right side of the recto/verso field in the “add” window I see the characters that I actually typed in a line below the line with the question marks. I searched the forum, FAQ and tried all troubleshooting tips.

Update : It seems that all my cards are garbled now (see screenshot “Parcourir …”).

I am using a Mac on Sequoia 15.7 (recently updated).
Anki version is ⁨25.07.5 (7172b2d2)⁩

Thank you for your help!

I assume you have an editing font set for those fields that is for some reason not displaying correctly. Try to change the font and restart anki for good measure. Also see Adding/Editing - Anki Manual.

Thanks for your reply! I changed the font, which was and has always been Arial plain and simple. But it worked, now I am on Helvetica for Latin script but before I was able to type Arabic with the same fonts, now it returns the same question marks when I use Helvetica for Arabic, strange …

Not all fonts support all characters (arabic in your case). I don’t know which font supports both, english and arabic letters, but you can probably find it somewhere on the internet. Apparently Geeza Pro Regular Font is used for arabic on a mac (see https://stackoverflow.com/a/45812506) though I have no idea if you have that font as well or if it supports english letters at all.

Maybe you could try to redownload Arial (or whatever your system used to use as a fallback font).

Thank you very much. The funny thing is, fonts like the one you mentioned don’t work either, although they worked before. I am a bit at a loss.

Maybe Apple changed something in a security update? Presumably a reboot doesn’t help? I can’t reproduce the issue with 25.07.5 on Tahoe.
