Error installing 26.09.3 - error writing to file

Apologies, I’ve used Anki for over 1.5 years. This my first post here.

I was prompted to install v. 26.09.3 when I synced my deck this morning. Part way through the installation I got this message:

error writing to file:

c:\users\clagg\AppData\Local\Programs\Anki\python3.dll.

Verify that you have access to that directory.

I restarted my laptop. I looked for the old Anki app to delete and reinstall it. It was already gone. I tried 26.09.2 with the same results.

The Anki app has been deleted, and there are only a couple of small files at the above location. Fortunately I still have my decks on my iPhone.

Any ideas? Warm thanks in advance.

Your collection data is stored separately from the app, so none of it has been touched unless you directly deleted it.

This patch was intended to fix the issues with upgrading from another version, but give these things a try –

First, thank you, Danika, for your time, expertise and for reassuring me that all my hand-entered files are not lost.

I’ll leave what I’d already written below, but before sending it you I decided to try changing the Installation Scope as you recommended. Problem solved! Your Icelandic phrase for the day is, Ég kann að meta þig, I appreciate you (literally, I know how to value you). And from the science fiction author Sir Arthur C. Clarke, “Any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic.” Visualize a hug, Danika :sparkling_heart: With best regards, Ella

This is quite strange. I tried to reinstall a few more times, but now at appdata\local\programs\anki there’s a folder titled: lib ( 81files, 18 folders, 240 mb) as well as mpv.exe and 4 .dll files, including python3.dll (51 kb)
