Deck presets not working: no new cards are showing in my Child deck

Hi guys.

On AnkiWeb and Ankidroid, I have 5 child decks and 1 parent deck. I created a new preset for the parent deck which all of the child decks are under and I used this same preset for the child decks.

When going into options, I have it set the “this deck” as 20 new cards and preset the same. I wish to have 10 new cards for 2 of the decks and the other 3, just 5 new cards each day.

I uploaded from anki to online but no new cards show up on my computer or android?

For my other langauge I study I don’t have these problems. Any help is welcome!

Please paste ‘Debug Info’ (Settings > About > ‘Copy debug info’) below:

'Debug Info' (Settings > About > 'Copy debug info')
  • Do those decks/subdecks have any New cards that are available to study – not suspended, not currently buried?
  • Have you already introduced New cards today from any of those decks/subdecks?

You can’t have both of those active on the same deck. Whichever one is visible when you Save is what the currently selected deck (the deck named in the title bar of that Deck Options window) will use – either the preset-wide or deck-specific limit. With that in mind, are you sure you have the limits set correctly for each of the decks and subdecks?

Hi Danika! Yes I have new cards to study. As of today only 1 new card is showing up in the first child deck.

For the parent deck I have 20 new cards and 20 cards in preset when going into options. For the remaining 5 child decks I have them the same. This is not correct?

In the two screenshots I have the parent deck and the child decks (Russian) As seen. Then the second screenshot Is when I click options on the Russian parent deck. All child decks are set like this too.

How did you check that? Which of the decks/subdecks are those cards in?

Did you double-check them as well, or are you assuming that? It’s a common source of issues like this.

Again, it only matters what is set on the tab that is saved, so when you check those other decks, pay attention to what tab is selected when you open the Deck Options.

What about the other 2 decks that are not child decks?

Hi Danika, No cards are suspended. The only new cards/unseen I have are in the Russian mined words deck. The rest are just reviews. The other 2 decks share the same preset.

If I’m not mistaken, that’s a top-level deck, right? So we don’t need to worry about any parent deck limits. But open the Deck Options for that specific deck – what are the limits you see without switching tabs? If that same 200 max reviews limit applies to that deck, you’re hitting it, so you won’t see any New cards.

It’s says there are 200 cards due in that deck. The other decks I’m only getting 1-2 new cards a day and even for some of those that don’t have new cards like the present tense and past tense decks, there are no reviews showing.

It says 200 because that’s the maximum you allow Anki to show you –

Are there more than that? Search "deck:Russian mined words" is:due in the Browse window – that is your total due and overdue cards in that deck.

Have you checked if those decks have any Review cards due today? Search the same as above, but with the other deck names – "deck:Russian::SUBDECKNAME" is:due.

Hi, I searched that in the browse bar in the mined words deck but it says it is invalid? I typed it just as you have done.

Here is a screenshot I took of the mined words:

When it says that, it tells you why. For instance, did you include the open and close quotation marks? Don’t type it, just copy it exactly as it is. Or you can select it from the left sidebar – click on the deck name, then type is:due after that.

That screenshot doesn’t tell us much about when they are due. For that you’d need to look at Future Due – and check the “Backlog” box.

So I copied and pasted in the browse box for mined words. I also did it using the left box with is due, Both screenshots show what I see in the same order.

Do you know where to find the backlog box?

So, it’s as I suspected –

It says 200 because that’s the maximum you allow Anki to show you

You actually have 326 cards due in that deck. As long as your number of due Review cards exceeds your daily maximum limit, you won’t get any New cards.

It’s above the Future Due graph in Stats. But that will tell you pretty much the same thing as that search did – you have overdue cards.

If you can handle more Reviews – raise your daily max limit. (Eventually, consider setting it to “unlimited” (9999) so you’ll always see cards when they are due.) If you cannot handle more Reviews, you shouldn’t introduce more New cards anyway, because those will just become more Review cards that you can’t handle.

Hi Danika,

Ok so I should check how many reviews I have left for each deck, like by clicking on the deck and looking at the screen that comes up and change the reviews to at least to how many cards I need to review or maybe to max. Max not too bad if I can always get through cards. I’ll look at each deck and see where the reviews are at. As for the child decks do you suspect it’s a simple thing?

If you keep your daily max set to 200, the study screen will only ever show you 200. You can use the same is:due search in the Browse window with any particular deck to see how many are due.

But to be clear – you need to run the search in the main search box (on the right of this screenshot), not the sidebar search box on the left.

Is there a different problem happening with the child decks?

Ok so checking the other child decks and the grammer rules deck, I have learned all of the cards so I can only review. But no review are showing up so I set the reviews at the same amount of cards that are there in each deck. As for the mined words, when i type that in its changes the card order but there is a lot. So I would need to set the review to unlimited or at least to the amount that is there. Though I should count all of the cards manually?

When you run the search, Anki will tell you in the title bar of the window how many cards it is showing you.

Ok for mined words, i found out how many is due, so I made reviews to be the same number. As for the other decks no new cards are due and only 1 is due for review. There is a total of 132 cards there I put the reviews at 340 the same as the mined words deck. I guess they change to the same as they both use the same deck preset. But Anki only shows 1-5 reviews each day for the present tense but none for the other decks. Is there anything that can be done?

I suppose that will work as long as you never have any more than that due.

Are there more than that many Review cards due?

[Edit]
Since searching is difficult for you, I thought of another way that might help you understand what is going on in your decks. One at a time, click a deck/subdeck, and then click Stats.

  • Scroll down to Card Counts and see what actually exists in that deck. [Make sure to check “separate suspended/buried” so you see those in their own category.] Are there any available New cards? Are there “Young” or “Mature” Review cards?
  • Scroll back up to Future Due – are the Review cards due today? When are they due? Use the buttons to select a longer time period if you don’t see anything.
  • [Repeat this for each of the decks you are asking about.]
