Custom study buggy

Hello folks,

I am having a bit of an issue that I was hoping someone could help with.

I’ve got one deck of cards which is having an issue: The “increase today’s new card limit” command in the “custom study” functionality seems to be glitchy.

When I try to increase or decrease my card limit, it never does what I request it to do (e.g. “increase by 4”). Instead, it will only ever work if I enter an extreme number, such as e.g. “99”. The problem is, it’s then impossible to enter a precise / smaller number, and it will instead jump to today’s maximum review limit or 0, no inbetweens.

I have tried gradually changing the numbers to see if I can spot a pattern, but it seems to be completely random. I created this deck about one year ago and it’s always had this issue. This is happening both on the desktop version and on AnkiDroid.

So far:

  • I deleted the deck, created a new deck and moved the new cards there
  • I have changed study / review options of the deck
  • I have deleted all my add ons
  • I have updated Anki to the newest version

But none of this has helped. If any of you could give some input as to what could be causing this, it would be greatly appreciated, as it’s a near daily annoyance and it’s honestly driving me nuts

There are a few of things that can make that particular setting a bit more confusing than you expect – like subdecks, original preset limits, prior changes, etc.

The main suggestion I’d give you is not to use that feature at all. Do this with a “Today only” deck-specific daily limit in Options instead. It’s a more robust feature that deals better with subdecks, and because it’s a flat number (not an increase/decrease), you can always look at it to see what you currently have set.

If you’re determined to use it anyway, there are things to consider –

  • At the start of your video, the deck shows 10 New – but is that because there are 10 available New cards in this deck (as the Custom Study window shows), or because the daily limit is currently 10?
  • What’s the original New card limit for this deck (set in its Options preset)?
  • Have you already adjusted it today? If so, do you know what it is currently set to (because there’s nowhere you can look that will tell you)?
  • Does this deck have any subdecks with New cards?

Hey, thank you a lot for your response!! I tried this yesterday and for some reason it wasn’t working (I think at this point I had already messed about with my settings quite a bit). But as my deck reset today, I just tried your solution again and it worked.

The situation is still a bit odd (I’ve got no idea why this was happening and I have had to create custom settings for this deck so the today only limit doesn’t apply to others when I just want to reduce new cards in this one deck). But this is for sure a workable solution for me and a big improvement vs. before. So thank you so much for your support!!!

You should take a look at the link I gave you (or the :white_question_mark: tooltips in the app). It’s already deck-specific.

Ah, it seems like I was too superficial the first time around. I got it now.

Honestly, I am very grateful and in awe that there are people who take time out of their busy days to help others. Thank you so much for your help!!!
