Custom study - modifying the number of review cards doesn't work properly

I reported this on Ankidroid github but was sent here, as “web version comes first”. Tried to reproduce it and it’s still an issue on web.

If you reduce the number by “-2000” and after that try to enter the desired number, it works. The devs said > "It seems to reduce the limit in the preset instead of the current number of reviews.

For example, if you have a deck with 9999 review limit then you’d need to subtract 9999 to remove the review cards, even if there’s just 1 review card."

I cannot post a video of me showing the bug, as I’m a new user. You should go to Custom Study and reduce the number of cards. The number doesn’t change.

Hope this gets updated quickly.

You should properly write down the steps and what you see.

The issue is that the “Increase today’s review card limit” affects the actual limit in the deck options rather than changing the current number of reviews.

  1. Set the review limit to 9999.
  2. Let’s say you have 30 reviews.
  3. Ente “-10” in the increase today’s review card limit dialog message.
  4. The limit now becomes 9980 so you still see 30 reviews.

It seems more intuitive to reduce the current number of reviews, but that can also be confusing. I think I read somewhere that this (and the related “Increase today’s new card limit”) should be removed since we already have that in the deck options.

Yes, ZornHadNoChoice is correct about this – that Custom Study item is working as designed. It changes the limit, not the number of cards. If you’re nowhere near the limit, then changing the limit won’t matter. This doesn’t need to be fixed.

You’ll have better luck using the daily-limit functionality in Options – Deck Options - Anki Manual . It will behave the same way – as a change to the limit – but at least you can see what the current limit is and understand that’s what you’re adjusting.

Thank you for the clarification.
However, it’s really counterintuitive, maybe it should get changed.

There is a limit to start with. This increases/decreases that limit. So not even just intuitive, but direct.

What you’re looking for seems to be not what this feature does. I’m sure you can imagine that changing this option to behave differently would be pretty unhelpful to the people that use it now. It’s is a legacy feature – and it isn’t even properly a “Custom Study” since it doesn’t create a Filtered deck.

So, it’s probably better for you to just use the other, newer method – where it’s much clearer what you’re changing, and it will get you to your goal – Change the existing review limit to what you want it to be for today.
