Hope I’m in the right place. I recently updated Anki desktop from 23.10.1 to 24.11 on macOS 11.7.10 and noticed a change in behaviour. This happened a few days ago, but I feel crazy since I can’t prove it.
I have a parent deck I use for pulling in cards from the subdecks. I have one option preset used by all subdecks.
Parent deck has no notes, subdecks have all the notes.
I have new cards/day set to 0 and this has not changed. I use the custom study feature to increase the new card limit on days I want to practice new cards.
Recently I discovered this stopped working. I feel like it happened when i upgraded to 24.11 but downgrading to 23.10.1 again didn’t fix it (maybe some configuration files still hang around?)
To get new cards I need to specifically use custom study “change today new card limit” on the subdecks directly. Previously it worked setting this on the parent deck and getting new cards from the subdecks.
Maybe something is amiss with how the options propagate from parent to subdeck? To test the options I increased Daily Limit: new cards/day for the Preset (which should affect the subdecks using the option config as well) through the parent decks options menu, but the subdeck with new cards did not pull in new cards. I again configured the same options but through the subdeck and basically set the new cards/day to the same value and saved and now new cards were pulled in.
This is a bit loopy, but I don’t understand how the options/custom study settings interact. I would expect that when I click a deck and select custom study and “Increase today’s new card limit” to some value, that would be reflected in the options panel Daily Limit under New cards/day for the “Today only” category.
How can I get the behaviour I expect back, by controlling new cards through custom study on the parent deck? Sorry for long-winded question, hope this is understandable, thanks!
This sounds like you are just getting adjusted to the v3 scheduler and how deck limits interact with each other. But it would have been working the same way in 23.10 (when support for the v2 scheduler was dropped) as it does in 24.11 – so perhaps you are recalling behavior from an earlier version. First thing – double-check that these decks are all actually using the same preset.
Exactly how to balance the limits against each other depends on the details of your situation. Where do you want the parent deck to pull the New cards from – e.g. from any subdeck because you are gathering in ascending order, from the 1st subdeck until exhausted, in equal (or unequal) proportions from all subdecks, etc.?
Once you pin that down, you can still use a single preset to control the parent and subdecks by using deck-specific limits – Deck Options - Anki Manual – and use “Today only” on the parent deck for your New-card days.
If you explain where you want the cards from, I might have suggestions on how to set your decks, but I’ll give you an example. Let’s say that on New-card days you want 5 cards from each of your 4 subdecks, for a total of 20. You can set the Preset limit to 5, and set the parent deck’s “This deck” limit to 0. Then, on New-card day, set the parent deck’s “Today only” limit to 20 to allow those cards to come through from the subdecks.
They are separate and don’t really interact. “Today only” is the newer feature, and it’s easier to use because it makes a visible change in your Deck Options. Adjustments you make through Custom Study do not show up there.
Thank you @Danika_Dakika for the very helpful and quick answer! Much appreciated.

I am also using AnkiDroid, which I also updated recently, and at this point I am suspecting that I was using AnkiDroid for increasing the daily limit, since I am quite sure that I was using 23.10 on my Mac. I verified this by comparing to an older version that exhibited the behaviour I was expecting (anki-2.1.49-mac). Safe to say that this is a PEBCAK situation Thanks.
double-check that these decks are all actually using the same preset.
I have done this Regarding gathering order, at this point I am fine with any order, since I assume that can be changed if I get it to work.
Then, on New-card day, set the parent deck’s “Today only” limit to 20 to allow those cards to come through from the subdecks.
They are separate and don’t really interact.
Interesting solution! That would mean that I would not use the Custom Study way, right? Is the Custom Study feature a v2 feature that is getting phased out?
I’ll try your approach, thanks again
That’s true, you can change it later on. However, gather is a bit unique because of how closely it is connected to the order of your cards in the New-queue, card siblings, and your arrangement of decks and limits. If you want to change it later, you may find yourself needing to change multiple things.
That’s right, you wouldn’t need that anymore.
It might have been available with the v1 scheduler too, but it is certainly legacy functionality and no longer needed since everyone (on recent releases) is using v3. Yes, it does seem like it is on the way out.
