Cannot update from 23.12 after using downgrade tool

Hello. I’m having an issue on macbook (M4) after I downgraded from 25.07.5 to 23.12 using the downgrade tool so I could use an older add on. I’m trying to upgrade back to 25.07.5 but everytime I try to upgrade, my version is stuck on 23.12.

Things I’ve tried:

  • Uninstalled anki from desktop, task bar, application, and trash. Then reinstalled.
  • Restarted in between deleting and installing.
  • Reinstalled using github link.
  • Uninstalled all add ons and reinstalled Anki.

I’ve tried searching on this forum, reddit, and discord for any updating issues but none of the solutions have worked. If anyone has any solutions or recommendations, that’d be great!

  1. Does this mean that you’re able to run the launcher and request an upgrade to a different version, but the upgrade doesn’t happen? Or are you not able to run the launcher? Any error messages?

  2. Is it possible that you have both an independent install of Anki 23.12 and an install of the Anki launcher on your computer? If they were installed in separate folders, they could co-exist on your system, and you might just be running the wrong one.

  1. Yes, I am able to run the launcher and the upgrade doesn’t happen. No error messages, Anki just works normally in 23.12 and the message that says there’s an updated version of Anki appears when I launch it.
  2. I tried to delete all versions of Anki on my laptop to the point where if I search in spotlight, Anki doesn’t appear. I’ve removed it from applications and my desktop. If there was another Anki that was installed in another folder, I have no idea which folder it could possibly be in.

Okay, thanks! i’m sure those additional details will help.

The advice I was going to give you was to uninstall and delete the program files folders from these locations: Managing Files - Anki Manual . It’s sounds like you’ve already done that now, so you should be able to reinstall from scratch with the launcher and get the updated version you want.

Oh my god, this worked! Thank you so much!!
