Can't update Anki

When I open Anki, I get a pop up saying “Anki Updated Anki ⁨25.02.5⁩ has been released. Would you like to download it now?” But no matter what I try, I can’t actually get it to update and the same pop up comes up every time. I have a 2020 Macbook Air. My Anki is currently running Version ⁨2.1.54 (b6a7760c)⁩ Python 3.9.7 Qt 6.3.1 PyQt 6.3.1.

I have tried both the Apple Silicon and Apple Intel versions. I close Anki, then click the link on the website, then open the file once it has downloaded. I drag the Anki icon over to the file icon, and then get a message asking “An item named “Anki” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re copying?” so I select “Replace.” But when I reopen Anki, I get the same pop up asking me to update. Am I missing a step?

I can’t open a deck that I want to import because it always says “Unable to read file. It probably requires a newer version of Anki to import,” so I need to figure this out and can’t keep using the old version.

This feels like such a silly question, but I really can’t figure it out. Thank you in advance.

Try manually updating from GitHub (Latest stable as of 17 july is 25.07.2)

My guess is you have two copies of Anki installed. Each time you try to update, you’re overwriting the one in Applications. But as you’re opening Anki from a different location, you’re going to keep getting the old version instead. If you’re using Spotlight (the magnifying glass in the top right of the screen) to start Anki, you can type in ‘anki’ and how down the command see to see where it’s located. If you’ve installed the old version in a non-standard place, removing it may resolve your issue.

Thank you so much! This was the fix! I had the old version in the dock at the bottom of my screen and had been clicking on that.
