Anki opens Anki Launcher instead of the app on macOS (can’t open normally)

When I double-click on the Anki icon, an Anki Launcher window opens in Terminal instead of launching the actual Anki app. I’ve tried reinstalling multiple times, deleting /Applications/Anki.app, clearing Launch Services, and downloading the latest version (24.10, macOS Apple Silicon).

I also followed the steps on the “When problems occur” page, but the issue persists — Terminal still launches that “Anki Launcher” menu every time.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Deleted all Anki files from /Applications, ~/Library/Application Support/AnkiLauncher, and caches.

  • Reinstalled from the website

  • Renamed the new app (“Anki Clean.app”).

  • Ran LaunchServices reset commands.

Despite this, the launcher still appears, and I can’t open Anki normally.

Does anyone know how to fully remove or bypass the Anki Launcher on macOS?

(System info: macOS [15.6.1], Apple Silicon M2, Anki 24.10 dmg build.)

24.10 isn’t the latest version of Anki.

If you’ve downloaded and installed the launcher – that’s the first step to updating to any version since 25.07. But then when the launcher menu opens, you need to proceed and let the launcher install the latest version. Have you done that?
