Can’t open Anki on macOS Ventura (error: “(null) is not allowed to open documents in Terminal”)

I’m having trouble opening Anki on my Mac (macOS Ventura 13.2.1, Apple M1 chip).

I wanted to upgrade Anki to the newest version so I installed Anki 25.09. But when I try to open Anki after installation, I immediately get this error message:

“(null) is not allowed to open documents in Terminal, so ‘launcher’ can’t be opened.”

After that, Anki doesn’t open at all.
When I check inside /Applications/Anki.app/Contents/MacOS, there is a file named Anki, but when I click it, I get another message saying:

“The application ‘Anki’ can’t be opened because it is not supported on this Mac.”

I’ve already tried the following steps:

  • Deleted and reinstalled Anki multiple times

  • Checked permissions and ran chmod +x launcher

So I’m not sure if the Apple Silicon (M1/M2) version is missing from the latest release,
or if there’s something wrong with the launcher permissions on Ventura.

Could someone please let me know how to fix this, or where to download the proper macOS build?

thanks!

Please see this forum topic and see whether the suggestions in it might help: BUG macOS: Anki doesn't launch, opens terminal instead

(Anki does install and work on M1 Mac computers with no problems and no workarounds needed, for most people.)
