The audio that I’ve recorded for my cards won’t play on either the desktop app or my phone.
I’ve tried creating my cards via both the desktop app and the iOS Anki app on my iPhone, and have recorded the audio for both of them (as shown in the screenshots below) but when I go to study my cards no audio will play.
It could be that the file isn’t playing, or it could be that the file doesn’t make any sound, or that you just can’t hear the sound it’s making.
When you preview or study the card, is there a play button showing, or no play button showing? If there is one, I assume you’ve tried clicking on it, and nothing happens?
You should be able to find these audio files on your computer outside of Anki (Managing Files - Anki Manual)? When you play the file in some other app, does it make sound?
Do you have other notes that have attached media? Does that media play just fine in Anki?
[Just a tip: You’ll have a lot more flexibility in the future if you put text and media (audio, images, etc.) in separate fields.]
Nope when studying the cards there is no Play button on either the iOS app or desktop app. I’ve tried pressing Replay Audio on the iOS app with full volume and nothing happens.
I’ve found the folder containing the audio recordings on my laptop, the folder contains both the recordings that I took via the desktop app and via my phone. The recordings done from my laptop end with .mp3, and can be played in external apps but for some reason the recording quality is particularly poor and choppy for some reason, but I can still hear it. The recordings done from my phone end with .m4a and can also be played in external apps, and these recordings sound perfect.
Nope I have no other notes.
Lastly, sorry I’m not entirely sure what you mean by this:
[Just a tip: You’ll have a lot more flexibility in the future if you put text and media (audio, images, etc.) in separate fields.]
What do you mean by flexibility exactly?
And also I’m not sure how it would work with me putting the text and audio in separate fields when making a card.
I’m learning Indonesian, and I would like to have the front of the card to have just the English text (eg. Banana) and then I wish to type in the Indonesian word for Banana (Pisang), and then for the back of the card I would like the text to read the Indonesian word for Banana (Pisang) accompanied with a recording that I’ve made of someone saying Pisang. So seeing as on the back of the card I would like both the Indonesian text, along with the recorded audio on the back, I’m therefore not sure how I could have it in two separate fields as there is only one field for the back of a card? I hope this makes sense.
That’s a good sign that it’s a template problem. If you also couldn’t see the word in the Back field, I feel like you would have mentioned that, so I expect that is showing up for you on the cards just fine. If the word shows and the play button doesn’t, and you mentioned that you’re trying to do a type-answer
– that’s the problem. A type-answer field strips out all formatting and won’t display any media.
Flexibility like – what if you want audio-only on the front of the card to practice your listening? Or if – like here – you want to have media show and a type-answer field.
It’s pretty straightforward. You just need 2 separate fields and 2 separate field-replacements on your template. The field that is called “Back” is a little misleading. It doesn’t have to contain everything for the back of your card – that’s what the back template is for. You can have a lot more fields on your note type, and you can customize your template to display the fields exactly how you want.
