Hi! I recently created a deck on Anki Web when I did not have access to my PC and tried to sync it to the PC version and completely lost the deck. Is there any way I can get the deck back?
I want to make sure I’m clear on your steps so I can help you in the right direction. Can you confirm or correct me on this?
- You already had a collection you were using on Anki desktop – had you never synced that to AnkiWeb, or had you not recently synced that to AnkiWeb?
- Did you create a new AnkiWeb account and start creating a new collection there? Or did you use an existing account and start adding more to it?
- When you got back to your PC and synced with AnkiWeb, were you forced to do a one-way sync? Which direction did you pick –
- upload to AnkiWeb – so the recent additions you had made on AnkiWeb are gone?
- download from AnkiWeb – so the collection you had on your PC is gone?
I had not recently synced the collection I was using on Anki desktop to AnkiWeb, but the deck I was using and lost was on AnkiWeb. I used an existing Anki account and added more to it. For the one-way sync, I selected upload to AnkiWeb, which added the decks from my PC to AnkiWeb but removed my recent additions.
Okay! That makes more sense based on what I’m seeing.
I can restore your collection in AnkiWeb from 3 days ago, 16 October. That is the only recent version available and you won’t have anything done after that date. Please let me know if you want me to proceed.
yes please! thank you so much.
Okay. That’s restored. Start Anki in safe-mode so it doesn’t auto-sync, because you’ll need to force a one-way sync (in Tools > Preferences) so you can choose Download from AnkiWeb.
But before you do that, you’re going to have to preserve your data on your PC, because that download will overwrite your local collection.
-
Export everything in your main collection as apkg, including scheduling – force a one-way sync and download from AnkiWeb – import the apkg you saved – sync again.
-
Or, if you don’t want to mess around with your main profile – Create a new (temporary) profile – set it up to sync and download from AnkiWeb – export everything you have there as apkg, including scheduling and media – log out of syncing (at some point, go back and delete this temporary profile) – import the apkg into your main profile – force a one-way sync to upload everything to AnkiWeb.
