Anki Desktop sync removed my AnkiWeb decks! Please help!

  1. Status of my Anki setup before:

AnkiWeb: Had some decks

AnkiDesktop: Was not synced and had 1 deck which wasn’t on the AnkiWeb.

  1. I wanted to sync the two so that all decks appeared both places.

  2. Pressed “y”, logged in on Anki and pressed “upload”, thinking it would append the deck on the desktop to the web.

  3. The problem:
Instead of appending, it removed all the decks on my AnkiWeb(!) and uploaded the only the desktop deck.

How do I get my AnkiWeb (pre-sync) decks back!?!?!?!!!
THANKS!

If you synced using that account on any other device, you might have a local backup on your side. But it sounds like you were trying syncing for the first time?

There’s also system-side backups (AnkiWeb periodically backs up user collections) which the staff members can probably get for you once they are here.

The way you merge two collections like this is by exporting the individual decks on your app using a .apkg format. Then after you’ve synced the collection with AnkiWeb, you can import the decks back in, then sync again.

Okay, thanks for your response!

Does that mean that the staff members regularly check-in on this site to solve issues?

Yes, they do. You’ll just have to wait for some time. In the meantime, you can continue using your other decks.

Yes, bk, there is a server-side backup from 21 Nov that I can restore to AnkiWeb for you. Please confirm if you want me to do that.

Once that is done – before you sync – you’ll need to protect your collection, as sorata said. Export your entire collection on your computer first (as apkg, including scheduling and presets), then set up syncing and download from AnkiWeb, and then import that apkg on your computer to unite the collections. Hi Danika,

I confirm that I would really appreciate getting back that server-side backup from 21 Nov!

Okay, that’s restored. Be careful downloading and be sure to read the messages before clicking through a dialog box.
