Anki app pictures not showIng up

Help please!

I am unable to see any pictures when I use the Anki app on either my iPad or my iPhone. All of the pictures show up fine on my Mac version, and show up on Anki web. It will instead say that the image is missing and have a small blue question mark. So far, I have made sure that everything is synced, and have reinstalled the apps on both my iPhone and my iPad.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Syncing decks is fast but syncing media files may take a little longer, try pressing sync on mobile to make sure it is complete.

Thank you for your response! Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with this issue since I downloaded the iOS app a couple of months ago - and have instead defaulted to using Anki on my computer only. To make sure - I resynced on mobile to make sure it was complete.

That’s a strong indicator that the files are not actually there, regardless of how many times you’ve synced. Media files may take time to sync - Anki FAQs

  1. Have you run Check Media on both devices to see how they are different?

  2. Are the files in a format that iOS can display?

Hi! Thank you for your response! When I just looked at check media - there were a significantly larger number of missing files when opening on Anki on my iPad than on my computer version. How can I sync those together?

Seeing as though I can see the images just fine when I do my cards on my Anki app on my Macbook - I would assume that they are in the correct format but I’m not sure. Thank you for your help!

I would at least try pushing a one-way sync to force reconciliation. Takes only a few seconds:

Anki - preferences - syncing - on next sync, force changes in one direction.

A dialogue box will pop up. From your desktop, choose upload. From your mobile device, choose download.

Keep in mind that, especially with large media collections, mobile devices can take quite some time to fully sync and may require multiple synchronizations before it’s complete.

It sounds like the images never synced to your iPad. Will you check on your iPad in Preferences that you have “Sync Sounds & Images” turned on – and on your Mac in Preferences that you have “Synchronize audio and images too” turned on (as in the above screenshot)?

If those are both on, then we just need to goose the system to get it to rescan the media. I don’t think forcing a one-way sync will do it, but if you add a file to/remove a file from your collection, that will trigger it on the next sync. [And it may take a few tries before it completes without timing out.]

Easy ways to do that –

  • In your Check Media result, if you have any “unused” files, delete them. [I’m suggesting this option first because it has the added benefit of helping the files you want to sync faster.]
  • Add a small image (or other media file) to any note or to your collection.media folder directly (you can remove it later)

One other thing you can try, if you’re still having trouble, is to log out on your iOS device, then sync again. That will force a rescan of all the existing media. Please make sure you wait until it says it’s complete after that.

Thank you all so much for your help! Ultimately, logging out and then syncing once logged back in fixed the issue. You all are lifesavers!
