I am using Windows 11.

Why does my taskbar icon for anki have a (2) next to it?

I noticed this a while ago but no longer see it now. I guess it has something to do with how you’re running Anki (maybe the shortcut). It looks harmless.

That naming convention in Windows means that there was already a file in that location with that name when this shortcut-file was created, so a (#) was added to avoid overwriting it.

Those may have been cleaned up by now, so you can just rename the shortcut – right-click your taskbar icon, right-click the shortcut name, select Properties, in the General tab, edit the name at the top, and OK/Apply.

If that doesn’t work, it means the other shortcuts still exist –

  • Paste this in File Explorer – %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar – to go to the default location where the shortcuts are stored.
  • [If that’s not the right location for you, go back to that General tab and copy the Location from there.]
  • If there are other Anki shortcuts there (without a number, with a (1), with other numbers besides 2), delete those.
  • Try renaming again.
