Wanting to duplicate cards within the same deck (to then reverse the new ones)

Hello, yet again Anki defeats me: This deck has the cards only in one direction of language. I’d like both. Changing the setting to ‘Basic and reversed cards’ seems to not cover all cards, i.e. some I’ll get in one language, some in the other.

So I guess the best is to duplicate all cards of the deck and then change their properties (swapping front / back essentially; something I was taught on this forum on how to do)? But how do I duplicate them in a way within the same deck that they have some clear ‘name’ so that I’m able to easily find all duplicates to change their setting?

Thanks!

You definitely shouldn’t try to duplicate anything. Try any of these things instead –

If by that you mean changing the note type for those notes – yes, that will probably work, but it only affects the notes/cards you currently have selected.

Thanks for the reply. Just to be sure that I’m really not creating a huge issue: this is the warning I get when - after creating a new note - I go on ‘add deck’. Is this what I should be doing or am I in the wrong category / part of Anki? These warnings terrify me…

This is a note-type change, so yes, you’ll need to do a one-way sync after. Syncing with AnkiWeb - Anki Manual

But it shouldn’t happen when you create a new note or new deck. In your screenshot, you’re in the template editing window, so were you creating a new card type?

That’s why the first step of what I suggested was –

  1. Make sure all of your devices are in sync.

If you’re not sure they are, click “No.” Then do a “full round” of syncing – without making any changes on any device, sync device A, then device B (C, D, etc.), and then device A again. Once everything is synced, you’ll be able to confidently make these changes and know that you’ll want to upload from this device, and download it on your other devices.

Sorry, my stupid questions continue… Synchonisation is done, the set up of a new note type is done - but somehow I’m still not sure how to get the cards copied into the new note. The below screenshot shows where I get to and then I’m stuck.

Problem

a) the front doesn’t display the English version…

b) I’d have assumed that as ‘card type’ I’d be able to choose a new note type as set up but that doesn’t show up (as otherwise I’ll probably just overwrite my existing ones which isn’t what I want; I want them with a ‘card 2’ label so that I can then reverse the order of the languages)

c) I forgot… tried so many things and am despairing.

  • Are those {{field replacements}} on your front card template the actual names of the fields used in your note type?
  • If you opened this through a particular note – does that note have anything in those fields – Front and Audio? If not, there’s nothing to replace on this card front, and that’s why you’re getting that message.

I think you have your terminology a bit mixed up. A note type can make multiple cards – each of those would be made by a certain card type (with front and back templates) within the note type. To use the note type, you select it when you’re adding a note, or you use Notes > Change Note Type to switch particular notes to use it.

In your screenshot, your note type is “Pocket Thai Engl to Thai.” The “Card Type” dropdown at the top shows that you’re currently looking at “Card 1” – if you want to see “Card 2,” switch to that. If there’s no “Card 2” yet, it’s because you haven’t created it yet. Follow the directions (and videos) that I linked to for how to do that.

Just when I was going to admit defeat I tried again all steps (not as if I’d not have done so but clearly I kept taking some ‘wrong turns’ without wanting to) and miraculously it all worked as hoped for! The switch button was found and worked after (!) suddenly the ‘card 2’ set appeared. Hurray!

Thanks again for all the support and patience! @Danika_Dakika
