Hi,
I am using Anki to study for my French A level.
I made a deck for a vocabulary unit, with just the basic (and reversed) type. It goes French → English. How do I change the card type to type in the answer (I’ve tried but everything goes blank) and then flip (the reversed) half of the cards so that one half does French → English and another half does English → French?
Let me clarify – Do you want:
(a) every note to create 2 cards: FR>EN and EN>FR?
(b) every note to create 1 card, but half of the notes to create a FR>EN card, and half of the notes create an EN>FR card?
With the default “Basic (and reversed card)” note type, you currently have (a). But if you want something else, I’m not clear on what it is.
That is easy to do with a small edit to your card templates, but I recommend waiting until after you get worked out what your card types/templates will be. Field Replacements - Anki Manual
I’ve already created the deck with the (a) option you gave. Every time I try to change it to type in the answer, it deletes half of the cards. How do I change the card type to type in the answer without it deleting half the cards?
That’s right, because the default “Basic (type in the answer)” note type doesn’t create reverse cards. What you want to do is modify your current note type, but first you should make a copy of it.
Make sure all of your devices are fully in sync.
Notes > Manage Note Types > Add
Select “Clone: [your note type]” – give it a meaningful name that says it is a type-answer note type that also makes reverse cards.
Select that new note type > Cards
Update your card templates (for both Card 1 & 2) to use a type-answer field. I can’t tell you exactly what you need to change without seeing your card templates, front and back, but the link above describes how you’ll need to change them.
Select all of the notes/cards in this vocabulary deck > Notes > Change Note Type. At the top, select the new note type you just cloned and edited. Check the fields and card template, but none of them should need to map to anything different.
