Any changes you make to your note type/template will be reflected across your collection. The decks merely contain your cards. The note types and it’s associated templates decide what cards are generated. SeeGetting Started - Anki Manual.
Essentially, you need a note type that generates only front→back cards and “Basic” is usually the one used for that. Have you tried using that?
If you’ve modified your note types it’s possible that “Basic” isn’t showing the default behaviour. In that case, you can go to Tools > Manage Note Types, and add a new “Basic” note type with a new name. And then use that for your cards.
If you have other notes that should keep using the note type and having 2 cards, you’ll need a separate note type for these notes.
If you haven’t customized your note type at all, it could be as simple as –
Make sure all of your devices are in sync
Select these notes
Notes > Change Note type
In the right column, choose “Basic” [if that is an unedited version of the default note type]
Make sure everything maps like you want, and save.
If you are using a custom note type, you should make a “Clone” of it first, and then you can make whatever changes you want –
Make sure all of your devices are in sync
Manage Note Types > Add > Clone:[your note type] > give it a meaningful name so you know it won’t make 2 cards anymore
Manage Note Types > Cards > Select “Card 2” > Remove Card Type > save
Then do the above – Select these notes – Notes > Change Note type – in the right column, choose your newly edited note type – make sure everything maps like you want, and save.
Thanks, so that prevents "card2"s being created that is get.
However when displying "card1"s I no longer have the option to ‘show answer’ which reveals an answer.
I dont know, I must be explaining myself badly, as this seems such a fundamanetal thing to do
Display front of card - eg. Horse
Test yourself
Click show answer - eg. Caballo
Show answer
Next card
Repeat
But I do not then want to see a subsequent later card “Horse->Caballo”. That card has no value to me.
The only thing that works is to browse the deck, highlight all "card2"s and suspend them.
Thanks. I havent created anything beyond the default card types. I’ve tried your suggestions but I dont end up with the desired result which is a deck of basic “card 1” cards that work like so:
Show cards - “horse”
Test myself
Click show answer
This reveals the answer “caballo”
Rate difficulty
Display next card
Ensuring that I’m not later be shown a corresponding “card 2” with “caballo->horse”
Creating a deck of basic cards doesnt have the reveal answer option in step 4 above.
The only way I have found this to work is to create the deck and accept it creates abunch of redundant “card 2” cards. I then browse the deck suspending all “card 2” cards. Only then can I get my desired result.
That makes sense now! Yeah, we were annoyingly suggesting you switch to something that is broken! Thanks for your patience while we figured that out.
I’m going to suggest what Keks did – but with a few more steps – so that hopefully you’ll get past this broken note type for good.
Manage Note Types > select “Basic” > Rename it to “brokenBasic”
Manage Note Types > Add > Add: Basic > name it “Basic”
Now you can do the steps I had above –
Make sure all of your devices are in sync
Select these notes
Notes > Change Note type
In the right column, choose “Basic” [if that is an unedited version of the default note type]
Make sure everything maps like you want, and save.
In the Browse window, search for note:brokenBasic to find anything still using that broken note type, and do ^^^ those ^^^ steps again for those notes/cards
Hey everyone, thanks so much for your help. I am set up as I need it and all is working well. Whether broken feature or user error I dont know, I wouldnt have known to edit the default behaviour but I may have done something inadvertently I suppose. Anyway, all is good and I really appreciate the help (and patience) from you all. Thanks again!!
