"Unexpected error" when trying to import decks into the desktop app

I’m a university student, and I’ve been trying to download decks that other students have made and then upload them to anki for my use. I’ve got no problem downloading the decks (from a shared google drive), but when I try to import them to anki, I get this message:

I’ve tried shortening the name of the file, removing any special characters (it’s just Week1.apkg) and making sure it’s a “.apkg” file. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Thanks

How are you making sure it’s an APKG? It needs to have that filename extension, but if you’re changing the extension from something else, that won’t be enough.

I’m pretty sure that’s what it was when I downloaded it

I just noticed that the error message says Unexpeceted – which is not the correct way to spell that word. I searched Anki’s repo, and this misspelling isn’t anywhere in the code. So now I’m wondering where the error is coming from if not from Anki.

  1. What are you doing to import the file? Are you using File > Import in the menus, or dragging the file into the Anki window?
  2. What version of Anki are you using? Go to Help (or Anki) > About – click Copy Debug Info – paste that whole result when you respond.
  3. At what stage of the import process does the error pop up? Or asked another way – what was the last thing you did immediately before this?
  4. Have you tried the Troubleshooting Checklist – Troubleshooting - Anki Manual ? Especially things like restarting Anki in safe mode before you try to import.

I was using the wrong anki

Oh, I’m glad you found out!

[Just to satisfy my curiosity – which one has that typo?]
