Trying to get started with syncing

I have created a deck on my laptop version of Anki, which I want to sync to my iphone and tablets. I have paid £25 for Ankimobile, which I now have installed on my iphone and tablets.
I have also (I think) created an Ankiweb account for myself. (Quite how Anki, Ankiweb and Ankimobile all relate to each other, I am not sure; perhaps that is part of the problem.)
My difficulty is that the instructions for starting syncing which I find online (manual and videos) seem to bear no relation to what I actually see on the screen.
For example, the manual says: “To start syncing your collection across devices, click the sync button (the top right one on the main screen, or press Y on your keyboard. You’ll be prompted for your AnkiWeb ID and password, which you created in the signup process. When you synchronize your collection for the first time, Anki will ask you if you want to upload or download.
But none of that actually happens. Instead, when I press on “Sync” on my laptop version of Anki, I just get a little box in the bottom left hand corner saying “Collection sync complete”, which doesn’t get me any further.

Anki is the main app, available for desktop install on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. AnkiMobile Flashcards is the companion iOS app, which has nearly all of the features of Anki. AnkiWeb, https://ankiweb.net, is (1) a website version of the app, with limited features, but handy for studying on-the-go, and (2) because you need to sync your collection to AnkiWeb to study there, it also serves as a backup for your collection, and a way to sync your collection between multiple devices/installs of Anki, AnkiMobile, and AnkiDroid (the companion Android app).

That means you’ve already signed into an AnkiWeb account on that device – so you’ve already done the step that the manual is talking about. Go to Tools > Preferences > Syncing, and you can see what email address you used there. You can access your AnkiWeb account using that same address at https://ankiweb.net/account/settings . You need to set up AnkiMobile to sync with the same AnkiWeb account/email address. Cloud Sync - AnkiMobile Manual

I can tell you (through support access) that there is an AnkiWeb account for the email address you used to post here. It was created in November, and accessed as recently as today, but it looks like the last time it synced with Anki (Windows) was in February. Is it possible you’ve created multiple AnkiWeb accounts?

Thank you so much! I think I may indeed have inadvertently created more than one account (tho I’m not entirely clear whether that is more than one Anki account or more than one AnkiWeb account).
I installed Anki on my SurfacePro but can’t seem to get from there to my deck, but I think the answer is not to use Anki on my SurfacePro but to rely on AnkiWeb to get at the deck which I have created on my laptop (which is what I use primarily). Does that seem likely? As you can probably tell, I am technologically challenged and very grateful for your assistance.

There’s only one thing. It’s an AnkiWeb account. If you think you have more than one, check your email addresses for emails from ankiweb.net. When you see which addresses have those, pick which one you want to use. For any others, you can login at the account settings page I posted, and “Remove account,” so you won’t have this confusion in the future.

Yes, if you want to study your Anki collection on a SurfacePro, using the AnkiWeb site is your best bet.

The SurfacePro is different from other Windows systems, so it can be difficult to get Anki working on there. I’m surprised you were able to get it installed and functioning at all. If you used some other app that you didn’t download or link to from our main site – https://apps.ankiweb.net/ – that’s probably why you’re having trouble connecting it to AnkiWeb. It’s not actually related to Anki. [There are knock-off apps that copy Anki’s name to deliberately trick users and a “Universal” app that was made by an outside group and abandoned some time ago.]
