My MacBook crashed and apple attempted to back up my data. When I turned on my new MacBook and downloaded the app, the cards were not there. Solution?
Where did they put the backup of your Anki2 data folder? It needs to be here – Managing Files - Anki Manual .

I’m not sure if they did. I can’t find anki2 when I search my computer. Would they have needed to select the data in a certain way to back it up?
They would have needed to back up data from that location, but I don’t know what you mean by “in a special way” other than that. Did they back up other data from the vicinity of that default file location? Did you have your Anki2 data folder located somewhere else that wasn’t default?
You appear to be syncing with AnkiWeb. If your data is there or on one of your other devices, the simplest way to recover would be to sync, and choose Download on your computer.
