Sync fails with "error send request for url ()" and "OS Error 10054" on Windows after reinstall

Hello. For about a week, I can’t sync my collection. I constantly get the error “error send request for url ()”. My internet connection is stable, the browser and all other services work fine. I tried disabling the antivirus and reinstalling Anki.

After reinstalling, I got another error when trying to download add-ons/update: “failed to run (2): … caused by: an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (os error 10054)”. I managed to solve this specific error by disabling the cache and enabling mirror downloads, but the main sync issue remains.

What I’ve tried:

· Disabled antivirus (Windows 11 Defender).

· Reinstalled Anki completely

· Changed DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.

· Tried using a VPN.

My main constraint: I have unsynced progress on my Android phone that I don’t want to lose by forcing an upload from the PC.

I’ve been using Anki for 2 years and would be very grateful for any help. Thank you.

You can export your collection in AnkiDroid and import it to your PC.

When you sync your phone, then log in on your computer via your internet browser, does that work for you?

In other words: Is it only the anki binary that has issues connecting to ankiweb or your entire Windows OS?

If I export a collection from AnkiDroid, I will lose the words that I added when I couldn’t sync. :frowning:

Only with Anki on Windows. The sync on the phone is fine

You can export any notes that haven’t been synced with scheduling information and import them back after syncing.

So that would be exporting an Anki deck package, not the entire collection? In that case, I understand, but it doesn’t solve my sync problem. I’ll keep it in mind as a backup option

Yes. It sounded like you can upload from your PC so maybe that will fix it?

Those sorts of errors are usually coming from your internet connection or your device. You mentioned a few things, but you should check everything – VPN, proxy, antivirus, firewall [see: Error establishing a secure connection when syncing - Anki FAQs].

If you can connect your computer to another internet connection, like a hotspot, you might be able to work out whether it’s your internet connection or something on your Windows machine.

Do you also have unsynced progress on your PC? A one-way sync in the other direction is also an option. But none of that matters until you get sync working again!

For now, an APKG export/import is annoying, but it will work to move your updated collection from device to device. AnkiDroid User Manual
