Subdeck counts not adding up

Hello,

I have recently noticed that the counts of subdecks for the Due column do not actually add up to the total for the primary deck. I admit I never really paid attention to it before other than if something is non-zero I have studying to do.

I have a primary deck (WaniKani downloaded from Anki’s shared decks page) and it has three subdecks, radicals, kanji and vocab. The subdeck counts for the “new” and “learning” columns add up correctly to the total for the main deck. However, the “due” counts do not add up correctly.

I have disabled all add-ons. I have updated to Anki Version ⁨24.06.3 (d678e393)⁩
Python 3.9.18 Qt 6.6.2 PyQt 6.6.1. The behaviors still exists. I have not seen anything in the help manual regarding this ins the sections that seemed like they would be pertinent and in fact the image shown under Decks is chapter five show the “Due” column all adding up correctly for the subdecks for “Languages” primary deck. I have skimmed through the Preferences Chapter and am not seeing anything that jumps out to me that should cause the counts to not add up as expected.

With all add-ons disabled, the latest Anki, restarted multiple times as well as my mac laptop what might the cause be? It there a setting someplace that effects the way these counts are added up? What might I be missing? How can I get the counts to add up correctly?

Out of curiosity and one at a time, I installed a couple add-ons that seemed like they might do work with those counts. “Deck Counts NowLater” and “Study-Review Deck” and still the “Due” column numbers are not adding up.

It sounds like your parent/subdecks have different daily maximum limits. Have you looked at your Deck Options for each of the decks? Keep in mind that they might not be using the same Options preset, and even if they are, any of them can have “This deck” limits that are different.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

I just checked and the Options/Default for the parent and subdecks was set at 20 for New Cards and 200 for Reviews, Options/This Deck was 30 for the parent deck and 10 for each of the three subdecks for New Cards and 200 for Reviews for each deck. I changed them all, parent and subdecks, to be 10 for New Cards and left Reviews at 200 and restarted Anki and the addition is still incorrect. I checked again the Options and they are as I just set them to all match at 10.

Any other ideas? Also, why would having different maximum limits mess with addition of due cards? If the maximum new cards for each subdeck is 10 and the maximum for the parent deck is 30 as I had it set to then even if all three decks maxed out new cards then that would be the maximum for the parent deck. I’m not understanding something apparently.

But, the New Cards column did not have the addition problem, the Due column does and isn’t that the reviews that are due? And the Options for that, Reviews/Day were all consistently set at 200. Both as the Default and as This Deck.

Okay so I noticed several posts with similar questions under Related that had not shown up in my searches. :unamused: And while they did not directly solve or answer my questions they led me to try something out and as it turns out it fixed the addition error. I don’t really know what though.

What I did was create a new preset (WaniKani-Parent)for the parent and set its new card limit at 30 and reviews at 210. I created a preset (WaniKani-Subdeck) that I applied each of the subdecks that had new card limit set to 10 and review limit set to 70. And, now the due column adds up correctly. I don’t get why this worked but it seems to be working at the moment.

I have new cards that won’t show up till tomorrow as I already studied my limit today so I will wait and see if they continue to add up correctly.

You were asking only about Review cards above, but your response was mostly about New cards (and very confusing) – so I’m not really sure what issues you’re having now.

If you are still having issues tomorrow, we can take another look. But you should make sure you don’t have any display modifying add-ons enabled. You clearly do in your original screenshot, and there’s no way to troubleshoot what Anki is doing if an add-on could be interfering.

Well several days later after my last post and every day the numbers for reviews and new cards have been adding up correctly. This is with or without add-on ons enabled. I have used the troubleshooting step of starting Anki with the shift key down to disable all add-ons and also starting with the add-ons enabled. There has been no difference either way.

So, it would seem that what I did in my previous post somehow fixed it.
