Review and New limit reached but I did not set a limit

This problem has been mentioned a few times before but I’ve never seen a resolution. Randomly today Anki showed me this:

Yes, I checked every setting - the limit is 9999 for Preset, This deck, Today only for both new and review.

At the time of posting there are 8 new cards and 1 review. I only have 1 deck.

I tried to use the custom study feature for both New and Review, but nothing happens, so at least some part of Anki is respecting the 9999.

I checked on AnkiWeb, and interestingly the Limits when I clicked in for the deck is 20/20.

But even after I change that to 9999, nothing changes. I am still shown that the limit is reached.

When the “next learning card” is ready, it will show it to me, but presumably not if it got matured to review.

And the count at the bottom will show that the 8 new and 1 review are buried.

One thing to note - before this happened I had turned off FSRS to try to see if I could be shown ALL cards from another deck that I have since deleted. But, after reverting all the settings, I have run in to this problem.

Anki won’t let you advance the date, so I have no idea if this will resolve itself if it turns over to tomorrow.

If you’ve seen other posts about it, hopefully you already tried the things suggested there. When things like this come up, they are almost always settings-related, and users often don’t reply to let us know the issue was resolved with the advice given.

[1] Is there a chance you’re not saving the changes in the right place?

Just to clarify for you – the only one of those limits that matters is the one that is selected when you save. That’s what controls and what is updated. If you click through and set each of them to 9999, ending on “Today Only,” and then save – only “Today Only” will be updated, that will be the limit today, and the deck/preset will revert to “normal” the next day.

[2] If that’s not the issue, then – have you run Tools > Check Database lately?

That’s not showing that they are buried – that’s showing that they will be buried, based on the other cards that you are slated to be studying today. But that’s unusual too, since you have no other cards in your study queue.

[3] Do you have any scheduling-realted add-ons? Like one that does other burying-related things? Or that “delays” cards for later in the day?

[4] Turning FSRS off/on shouldn’t cause anything like this. But were the cards in that other deck related in some way to these cards? Or did you grade 9999 of them before deleting them?

Indeed, I checked what was mentioned in the other threads first before posting.

Since I posted somehow the number that will be buried went to 5.

[1] I went through and saved thrice - once on Preset, once on Today, and once on This deck. Still no changes.

[2] I ran the check database tool and it said

Deleted ⁨8⁩ cards with duplicate template.

Database rebuilt and optimized.

[3] I do have FSRS helper. The only interaction I’ve had with it in the past few months is when I turned off FSRS yesterday, it prompted me to either turn FSRS back on or delete FSRS helper.

I tried a few things with FSRS

[a] Reschedule all cards - this seemed to bring some cards up for review but not change the new cards.

[b] Advance cards in all deck - I tried advancing 5 cards then rating them. No change to the original issue.

I find it odd advancing works but not custom study, since in my mind they work the same.

I’ve also tried disabling all the add-ons but nothing happened.

[4] I did not grade them before deleting the deck. There are no overlaps.

[5] I deleted FSRS Helper, then tried to restart Anki. Upon attempting to close it it threw this error:

Anki then just greyed out and I had to close it from Activity Monitor.

Tried it on my laptop - deleting FSRS helper - and encountered the same issue, probably just something with the way FSRS interacts.

But upon restarting Anki, the issue persists.

[6] I did revert to an earlier backup, and that does resolve the issue. However, I would have to redo ~500 cards T_T Plus there’s no guarantee that it would stay normal once I get to a similar point in new cards/reviews

[7] Unsure if this is related, but all the new learning cards now have the same intervals.

I seem to remember this being very common whenever I’m doing my cards after 1am but before it turns over to the next day.

[8] It has turned over to the next day, but it seems the New cards are in the same state

I ended up biting the bullet and resetting to an earlier backup. It’s been fine so far but on the Mac app I had another instance of it saying I hit my review limit. I hit undo a bunch of times and it went away, we’ll see if it comes back.

It sounds like this is working a bit better for you now, but a few responses –

It does not matter what you saved the 1st or 2nd time, only what you saved the 3rd time. As I said – that’s the only thing that is active.

Sometimes it works better if you disable an add-on before deleting it. If you’re still getting that error, try – reinstall the add-on, restart, disable the add-on, restart, then delete the add-on.

I’m sure you’ve gone forward with studying in the restored backup collection by now. I think that the cards identified and removed by Check Database was probably the cure. Have you run Check Database again since you restored?

If it’s a brand New card, those intervals depend on what your learning steps are, whether you’re using FSRS, what your parameters and Desired Retention (DR) are, and yes, what time of day it is. There’s lots of ways that can happen, so your deck Options and the Card Info would be the best places to look to figure that out.

There’s nothing unusual about that. Those are New cards that will be buried based on the other cards that are slated to be studied today. Deck Options - Anki Manual

[9] Have you checked to make sure your decks and subdecks are all using the Options preset you think they are? And verified whether any of them have deck-specific “this deck” limits?

I did disable then delete, but have since re-installed. Working fine so far it would seem.

I am remembering now that did use the flatten future cards function once in FSRS, with a cap at 100 per day. I don’t know how persistent that is, or if it’s just a one time thing.

[7] I misspoke, it was the review cards. But I think this is just because even if the interval is, lets say 2.3 hours, since it would be past 4 AM it is the next day, so it says 1 Day.

[9] Yes, all of them are 9999 for all the presets anyway.
