Study Tools overlay display error

I’m on AnkiMobile on my ipad and my tools overlay function is being really weird. When i press the tools overlay button on the right corner of my screen, it opens the tools overlay bar in the top left corner of my screen. This is veey small and does not allow me to read what any of the buttons are saying. It is also not letting me make my text size smaller.
Any help would be really appreciated as it’s preventing me from doing my work!

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I thought I had seen this issue somewhere else, and I was able to find that ticket – is this what you’re seeing [screenshot from another user]?

  1. Are you updated to the most recent released version – which I believe is 25.02.x? [:gear: Preferences > About] – if not, try #2 instead of simply updating.
  2. Even if you are using the current version, have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app? [Make sure your collection is fully synced to AnkiWeb first.]
Report that goes with this screenshot, from another user in February –

I have recently experienced an issue where the tools overlay does not display properly (see image), and as a result, I am unable to adjust the text font. I have tried logging out and back in, as well as deleting and redownloading the app, but does not fix the issue. This error also shows like this even when the phone is held in landscape orientation.

I tend to my cards on my iPad but recently the settings has been minimized and not showing my options. It just shows as small little window in the top left of the screen. I have the app as the newest update and I have tried deleting and redownloading the app multiple times and still is not working. Help fixing this please.

I have found two other times that users reported this, both back in February – but they didn’t respond to follow-up questions, so we don’t know what caused it or fixed it for them.

  • When you did this, was it a full delete of the app and your data from your device – as opposed to just “offloading” it? [Obviously make sure your data is synced to AnkiWeb before you try this.]

  • After you uninstalled, did you restart your phone before reinstalling the app?

  • Go to :gear: Preferences > Review > Tools Overlay Button – try disabling that and/or switching the position to the other side.

LIFE SAVER. So previously I had completely deleted the app and redownloaded it, but it still kept doing it.. i tried 3 times…
But I just deleted it and restarted my iPad after deleting the app. Then when I redownloaded it after deleting the app, it somehow fixed it… Thank you so much!

Hi, on the latest anki beta on iPadOS 18.6, if you open the menu in the bottom right when on a card, swipe or swap to a different app, and then swap back to anki, the menu collapses into a tiny box in the top left-hand corner. It doesn’t happen when you just minimise anki, only when swapping apps.

You’re the first user that has told us about a specific cause, thank you! I haven’t been able to reproduce it yet, but this is a lead, at least.

Continuing from the questions above –

I already saw that you’re using 25.07.3, and thank you for your OS version info [so far it’s been reported by users on iPadOS 16.2 and 18.5, and iOS 18.5]

  1. Is this consistently reproducible for you when you have the Study Tools menu open and you switch apps?
  2. Have you been able to get it to go back to “normal”? If so – what works?
  3. If you haven’t been able to get it to go back to normal yet – have you tried returning to the Decks screen – opening other screens in the app (Add, Edit, Browse, etc.) – force closing the app – restarting your device?
  4. Also try opening :gear: Preferences > Review > Tools Overlay Button – try disabling that and/or switching the position to the other side.
  5. Try uninstalling the app, and restarting your device before reinstalling it. [Make sure your collection is fully synced to AnkiWeb first.] It worked for the last user after a few tries.

Thanks, with those steps I can reproduce the ‘returning to home screen makes the box small’ bug. The last person who reported a similar-looking issue was in a different boat though - they were getting that even when restarting/reinstalling AnkiMobile, and a reboot of their device is likely the thing that resolved the problem (so in that case, it’s likely to have been an iOS bug).
