Outdated Mac OS user / impossible update

Hello Anki community ,

I’m currently facing a serious stumbling block that I can’t solve by myself and I’m desperate to find the solution.

I’ve been using Anki for a decade now on an old but pristine MacBook pro from 2012 running MacOS High Sierra that I recently updated for MacOS Catalina (10.15.7) . Since the Catalina update , my Anki app is no longer working ( slashed app logo ) and when I double click , it tells me “ Anki must be updated “ and it does not open … It worked perfectly before on High Sierra but now it’s too late to turn back … I know the data are there but it’s not possible to make it work . I purchased a new MacBook pro and transfered the Anki app on it , but it’s still not usable ! I am ready to downgrade my old mac to High Sierra so that it will work again ? Or Maybe someone could provide me with an anki catalina version to make it work ? How can I update or extract the files to make it work on my old and new Mac ?

The end justifies the means , I I’m open to any solutions .

Best regards .

Matthieu .

Regarding your old MacBook Pro running macOS Catalina 10.15.7, you could try older versions of Anki to hopefully find one that works: Releases · ankitects/anki · GitHub

I note that macOS Catalina 10.15 was the first version to drop support for 32-bit applications. If the version of Anki you had installed was a 32-bit application, that might explain why it stopped working (with a “Anki must be updated” message) after you upgraded from macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Regarding your new MacBook Pro, “transferring the Anki app on it” is not the best course of action. Your old MacBook Pro has an Intel CPU, but new MacBook Pros instead have Apple Silicon. If you transfer the old Intel-based Anki program from your old computer onto your Apple Silicon-based new computer, the Anki program will not run. Instead, I would advise deleting the program files you transferred over and simply installing Anki from scratch.

(As always, make sure you first back up and/or copy your decks and media files and have the backups/copies stored in a safe location.)

You should be able to use the QT5 build of 24.11 with macOS 10.15 – Install & Upgrade - Anki Manual .

Thanks for the quick reply !

You put me on the right track to solve my problem . Long story short : I updated my old obsolete Anki web on my former Mac and it was almost working except that it was full of bug messages like : ID or password was incorrect please try again or syncing… it was frozen up … So I decided to send this defective updated Anki version via airdrop on my new Mac and it almost worked . The system requested a V3 scheduler instead of V1 and after updating , everything works perfectly on my new Mac !!! I understand nothing and for me it’s like magic ? Anyway my problem is solved , this is a real lesson to me : in the future I will keep everything up to date to avoid stressfull disapointment !
