New Anki user. Many similar topics - my apologies for adding another. I found hints, but I have not solved this issue.
Quick Summary:
On both AnkiDroid and Windows desktop Anki (most recent versions at least), I cannot make sound work at all. Yet when locating the MP3 files in Windows, they will play by themselves. I am using pre-made card decks from Scottish Gaelic from more than one source. None work. The templates SEEM proper, when comparing to the user manual where templates are described.
More Detail:
Have an account; I am a new user. Loaded AnkiDroid first, then Scottish Gaelic pre-made decks. Could not get any sound. Media (MP3) appears in Internal Storage…com.ichi2.anki… Syncing to Ankiweb is working. Media Check says no missing or unused files. I have not changed the default settings for automatically playing the media file. (Don’t play automatically is NOT checked.) My understanding is the default is to automatically play the media. There is no Play button (triangle icon) showing on the cards.
Android is difficult to debug on (for me), so next, I loaded the Windows desktop version to get easier visibility. Syncing to the web works. No audio there, either. I started doing specific card checks: find the audio file name in a particular card, then locate that in Windows: …AppData\Roaming\Anki2\User 1\collection.media The MP3 file is there. The file plays in Windows when double-clicked.
I am suspecting something in the template of the Decks (plural) since both applications (droid, windows) have the same issue, but none of the Decks works. [I have not tried loading a Deck for another language from another known-working source: I don’t know what is known-working.] Using the Anki app browser on Windows, I spot-checked the “Ciamar?” card.
Appearing in the right side of the browser:
Gaelic: Ciamar?
English: How?
Audio: [sound:unit_14_conversation_02_6.mp3]
(The MP3 file above is located in the AppData folder I listed, and it plays properly by itself)
Fields… button:
1: Gaelic
2: English
3: Audio
Cards… button:
Card Type: Forward: Gaelic → English
Front Template:
{{Gaelic}}
Back Template:
{{FrontSide}}
{{English}}
Styling:
.card {
font-family: Times New Roman;
font-size: 25px;
text-align: center;
color: black;
background-color: white;
}
.card1 { background-color: #ffffff; }
.notes {
color: green;
font-size: 18px;
}
Aside from maybe the Styling part (?) the template looks correct to me. But maybe there is a new way the audio files are supposed to appear. Regarding styling, the front and back of the card looks as I would expect, when using Preview. As noted, no Play button (triangle icon), but on Preview, the Replay Audio button is present (but no sound for it, either).
This is just mystifying to me. I will note that there are comments from others on the Scottish Gaelic website about one of the Decks, which are all positive, except the most recent comment which remarks that there is no audio. I am suspecting something about the expected/allowed/supported template has changed, and the Decks are somehow non-compliant. I did read from another forum post about how the audio template may have changed for recent Anki versions, but it looked specific to iOS (?) and was a bit past my understanding.
Please help if you can. Thank you!
