Large deck keeps offering me the same limited set of cards

I wonder if there’s something I don’t understand about using anki decks. I downloaded the shared deck: Genki 1 3rd edition with sound files. The description claims there are 1,076 notes (actually there seem to be over 2,000). However when I review the deck, it seems to just reshuffle the same one hundred or so cards. The deck does feature subcategories- Lesson 1, 2, 3 etc, and when I click on these I’m able to see different cards. However, I’d like to be able to review the whole deck, not focussing on any particular lesson. Any ideas?

There might be a few things you don’t understand yet – or there might be issues with the deck/your settings.

Make sure you understand the difference between notes and cards – Getting Started - Anki Manual . It sounds like this deck has multiple cards from each note, and that may account for some of what makes it seem like you’re always studying “the same” cards.

Ordinarily (and with mostly default settings), the cards in a set of decks will be introduced gradually and in order – Studying - Anki Manual . As you are introducing New cards, you also continue to Review cards that you have already learned. When you get those Reviews correct, those cards will be scheduled for longer intervals – incorrect, and they will be kept at shorter intervals.

If you’re not a beginner and you just want to launch into the deck at random, there’s a few ways to do that. It depends on how the cards are being kept in order. So, some questions first:

  • How is the New-queue in order? Take a look at the “Due” column in the Browse window – Browsing - Anki Manual . For New cards, that will show a “New #” for their position in the New-queue. If you sort all of the cards by the Deck column, are the New #s still in order top to bottom?
  • Do you want to keep the cards in all those subdecks? The deck appears to be overburdened with subdecks. One way to shuffle involves getting rid of that structure – or substituting tags for them, if you like. But if you want to keep them, there are other ways.
