Images not loading, only little square with blue and green thing

I have tried syncing, redownloading the shared deck, and checking the media sync. This is what it says:

Missing files: ⁨8944⁩

Unused files: ⁨671⁩

I am not sure how to get these missing files back. Please help! Thank you!

There can be a number of reasons for that. If you say a bit more about what devices you’re using, where your collection has been, etc., it would probably help. For instance – are you trying to sync your collection to a new device/install?

No, it has been my same computer I am trying to sync

You’re going to need to tell us more than that. Otherwise we’d just be guessing.

I can see that your account has synced with multiple devices in the past, so start there.

  • Are both devices having the same problem?
  • Do both devices give the same counts in the media check?
  • Did the images used to appear fine and they stopped, or have they never appeared?
  • Are these images you added yourself, or imported with a shared deck?

it is only one device. my computer. For example, I created a separate user, uploaded the same deck, but the new one has the images while my old one does not. the images have appeared before when I used this deck. these images are imported with a shared deck. see the uploaded image to see what it looks like on my original user while the other has the images (the original user is where I have all my of my reviews and saved cards).

i see what you are saying about multiple devices. I never use my ipad for anki anymore, only my computer.

For the example card you posted, what is the filename of the missing image that you circled? Does the file exist in your collection media folder? Or, is it one of the files that Anki says is missing, and the file is actually missing?

Assuming that the problem is that the image files are actually missing, if the separate user you created has the same deck and the image files show up fine for them, that means that the separate user has the image files in their collection media folder. You could simply copy the image files from the separate user’s collection media folder into your original user’s collection media folder. That should fix the issue (assuming that the only problem is that that the files were missing in your collection media folder).

I already tried to do that and it did not work. How do you see the file name of the photo from the card?

Unless you are using an add-on that changes the study window, there is an “Edit” button in the bottom-left corner of the card. Use the button to bring up the Edit window.

Or, you can search for the cards in the Browse window. For the example screenshot you posted, search for “Clostridium perfringens” or “Penicillin Clindamycin”.

When you see the field with the broken image icon, hover your cursor over the field and then toggle the “<>” button that appears above the field. That will expose the HTML Editor where you can view the image filename.

i found the file name under missing media. I already tried to export the media from a deck that was working and copy it over to collection media. Not sure what else to try

For the “separate user” you created, do you mean a different user on your Mac computer? Or, do you mean a different profile in Anki?

The collection media folder is:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<profilename>/collection.media

If you used a different profile, you should be able to copy the file from:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<profile1>/collection.media
to:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<profile2>/collection.media

If you used a different Mac user, you coud copy the file from:
/Users/<new_username>/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<profilename>/collection.media
to:
/Users/<original_username>/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<profilename>/collection.media
(But, since the files/folders are owned by 2 different users, you would need to change the permissions for the files/folders so one user has permission to read and copy the files owned by the other user.)

Once you have identified the right folders and permissions, you can just use the Finder to copy over the missing image files from one collection media folder into the other collection media folder.

Hi, I do not have a Mac, I use an HP spectre. I used a different user but when I ended up logging in to my profile on the user, all the images went back to looking like that even though they were working. Let me try this and see what I can do.

Sorry, I mistakenly thought you had a Mac. For the equivalent locations for the files in Windows, please see the documentation.

If you log into Windows as your original user, start Anki, create a new Anki profile, switch to the new Anki profile, and then import the deck under the new Anki profile, then the new Anki profile should have the image files and you should also be able to access to both collection media folders in the filesystem. At that point, you should be able to copy over the missing image files from the new profile collection media folder to your original profile collection media folder via the Windows filesystem.
