Images not displaying

Hello I’m having a very specific and odd issue with the images not properly displaying for SOME of my cards.

When I first import a deck, all the images in the cards display properly, but randomly* the images on some (not all!) cards become image icons and do not display.

* when I say randomly, I’m not sure if it is random, I notice it happens when I try to sync to anki web, restart anki, or just after a while of using the deck (maybe after my computer has cleared its cache of the files, idk?)

When I checked media it says that 10320 files are “unused”

I have tried troubleshooting a lot including doing these things:

  • Disabling and deleting add ons
  • Deleting and restarting anki
  • Making a new profile and importing the deck again (works well until I try to one way sync and problem happens again). As a result, I uploaded the deck again to a different profile and have avoided syncing (but now I have to restart my progress)

Other important notes:

  • I’m using an Apple laptop (macOS 15.6.1) and the most updated version of Anki

  • This deck is not the issue as I know many others who have imported and been using it without any image issues

  • I have a lot of progress on this deck (on my original profile) that I don’t want to lose

  1. Is this disappearing happening on the same device where you imported the deck originally – or on a device you synced the deck to after that?

  2. Do the images not show up on the cards when you study/preview them, or do they also not show up in the Browse window when you look at the notes?

  3. How exactly are the images referenced in the note fields? Click < > above the field to open the HTML view, and copy-paste that here – as text in a preformatted-text/code block . That will also tell us the file type.

  4. Do your filenames have special characters in them?

  5. Have you checked that list of “unused” files to see if there are ones with similar names to your missing files? You can copy-paste that list into a text document and search for partial names.

  1. Its happening on the same device where I imported the deck originally

  2. The images do not show up on both the cards during preview/study AND the browse window

  6. I just checked and the unused files correspond to the images in the cards that do not display correctly, is that what you mean? If not, I’m not sure what you mean by “missing” files as I only have 1 missing file under “check media”

At the time of the problem, did you have more than one profile in Anki?
And, do you have only one single ankiweb account?
And, did you sync the multiple profiles to that one single ankiweb account?

If so, you might want to see Media disappearing/becoming corrupt in case that might be the same issue that you are experiencing.
