I want cards to always present in native language, never in target language

I want cards to be presented in native language, with target language displayed only after I click “Show answer”. But Anki routinely shows some cards in target language first. I have tried many things to fix this but nothing works.

What have you tried to fix it?

Are you familiar with notes, note types, and card types – Getting Started - Anki Manual ?

What you’re asking for has to do with what information is in which field of the note, where those fields are displayed on the card templates of that note type, and how many cards are made from each note. But it’s hard to tell you exactly how to fix it without knowing what is going on with your notes, note types, and card types.

Is it because the deck you are using is using Reverse cards?

To check this:

  1. Choose Browse from the front page (Decks).
  2. Select the deck in the left pane under Decks.
  3. Select one card in the right pane, and note the Note Type.
  4. Now, select that Note Type and right-click on it, then choose Manage Note Types.
  5. If there is a field called “Add Reverse” or something similar, then you have a deck that uses reverse cards. That is, it will show you a card and ask for the translation of the word or phrase. On a later day, it will show you the reverse: i.e. the word or phrase in the other language and ask for the translation back to the first language.

If you have a reversed deck, you can simply change that field to be empty or to hold an “N”. That will stop the reversed cards appearing.
