I received an email on the 8th april notifying me that my account has expired and will be deleted. However, I did not see the email and it is now deleled. I tried finding the documents on my laptop but I recently did a factory reset that deleted all my files. How can I recover my files? Would Anki be able to recover anything?
If your account got deleted and you don’t have local backups in none of your device, you’ll need to start a new account. That account can not be recovered anymore.
Remember that if your account is inactive for 6 months the account will get automatically deleted. Anki will send you an email before deleting if you used that account for at least a week.
From the manual:
As AnkiWeb is a free service, we need to periodically delete unused account data in order to keep costs down. As mentioned in our terms of service, your data may be deleted if you have not accessed your account or synced in the last 6 months.
If your account has been inactive for 6 months or more, and you used the service for a week or longer, we will send you an email notifying you that deletion is pending. If you’d like to keep your account active, please log in to ankiweb.net and study a card, or sync one of your devices within 30 days.
I’m sorry you’re running into this, but yes, AnkiWeb accounts are subject to deletion if they are inactive for period of time. If there’s anything that can be retrieved on the server side, @dae will be able to respond about that the next time he’s online.
On your side, did you have the important files on your laptop backed up to any cloud services? Did you also sync any other devices (phones, tablets, etc.) to AnkiWeb? Those would have copies of your collection or backups as well.
Just to clarify, it’s the data in the account that is deleted. The account can still be used again. If you do not have the data stored on any of your devices anymore, I’m afraid it is lost.
