Global seting for card display order

Hi there,

Is there a way to change the global order in which the cards appear, e.g. to show review & learning cards before new cards? This setting disappeared in version 2.1.66.

There used to be a setting in the earlier versions:

Preferences (Tools --> Preferences or Ctrl + P on Windows).
Scheduling tab
Click on the drop-down menu that says "Mix new cards and reviews" and some other options something like "Show review cards before new cards or something".

I know you can set this individually for each deck, but this is not really useful for me, I have multiple sub decks in a main deck - example:

Main Deck:
- Sub Deck 1 (has its own settings)
- Sub Deck 2 (has its own settings
- and so on

Is there a trick to setting Anki to show review & learning cards before new cards, like it used to?

Thanks a lot.

Hello
It seems like the feature to change the global order of card display in Anki Desktop has been removed in version 2.1.66. However, there might be a workaround for achieving the desired order of review and learning cards before new cards.

One possible workaround is to use the “Custom Study” feature in Anki. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. After opening Anki, go to the main screen where your decks are listed.
  2. Select the deck for which you want to study review and learning cards before new cards.
  3. Click on the deck to highlight it, then click on “Custom Study” at the bottom of the screen.
  4. In the custom study options, select “Review ahead” to prioritize review cards over new cards.
  5. Set the number of review cards you want to study in the custom study session.
  6. Once you’ve completed the custom study session, you can return to your regular study session.

Although this workaround involves a manual step, it allows you to prioritize review and learning cards over new cards for the selected deck. Thanks for sharing

Hello AnkiWeb Community,

I’m a long-time user of Anki Desktop and have recently noticed that the ability to change the global order of card display seems to have been removed in version 2.1.66. In earlier versions, there was a convenient setting under Preferences > Scheduling to prioritize review and learning cards before new cards.

This feature was particularly helpful for managing study sessions, especially when dealing with multiple decks and sub-decks. While it’s possible to set this order individually for each deck, it becomes cumbersome when working with nested sub-decks.

I understand that Anki aims to provide flexibility and customization options for users, so I’m wondering if there’s a way to reintroduce this feature or if there’s a workaround available. Perhaps there’s a hidden setting or an add-on that can achieve the desired card display order globally?

Additionally, I’ve noticed discussions on GitHub regarding similar feature requests. Here’s the link to the GitHub repository:GitHub Anki Issues

Any insights or suggestions from the community would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and assistance!

Best regards,

If you have 10 decks and you click on each one separately, then you’ll need to adjust that setting for each deck preset that those decks use. If you only click on the main deck, then you only need to adjust the main deck’s preset.

Hello thank you for sharing your workaround.

I still hope we will find a solution to set it again globally.

@stevediaz I couldn’t click on the Github link.

@dae What do you think about this?
