For three kids, three profile or three decks?

Hello All, I am new to Anki and I need some suggestions.

I have three kids, 6, 9 and 9 (yes - twins).

I want to use Anki to expand their vocabulary. Currently I am building a word set for twins and another word set for the 6yo.

Both sets will be filled with cards at the rate of 20 per day.

I tried to use the deck option - however, the duplicate entries drove me crazy. Everytime when I import the words from csv file, it always updates existing deck. So I cannot create two identical decks for the identical twins. Since their brains and their progress are slightly different, I prefer to separate their progress and let them to learn at different but comfortable pace.

Then option two will be three profiles - which will be a lot of extra work for me. I will need to add the words to the deck for profile one, and export to package, and then import to another profile, everyday. And also, I will need three ipads…

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Everytime when I import the words from csv file, it always updates existing deck.

When importing text files, you get an option that decides which deck the new notes go to, and whether importing updates exisiting notes (not deck) or create duplicates of the existing notes. Does this work for you?

If you’re doing three profiles, you should be able import the same .csv/.txt to all of them.

For three kids, you definitely want three profiles. You’ll want them to have their own cards and review history. As they grow, they may have different interests and want to study different things as well.

You shouldn’t! You can use profiles there as well – Preferences - AnkiMobile Manual – but you will need 3 separate AnkiWeb accounts. Make sure they are syncing at the start and end of their study sessions.

From your end on Anki desktop, you can easily switch between the profiles – Profiles - Anki Manual – for importing and other maintenance. Then your changes will sync to each of their AnkiWeb accounts separately.

You can control the rate at which the cards are introduced with the daily New card limit, so you don’t need to import new material daily. You’ll be able to use the same import file for the twins’ profiles.
