Decks disappeared however appear in browse

Good morning,

I have opened the ANKI app on my computer this morning to find that an ANKI deck which originally held around 2000 cards was completely empty. The ANKI app on my ipad and iphone have not yet synchronised thus the deck is still there. I have logged into AnkiWeb and the deck is empty there also. I would like to retrieve this deck.

Moreover, I range of cards that I created over the weekend are no longer appearing within a deck. However, if I browse my entire collection I can find the individual cards. There location is said to be in a deck that doesn’t exist.

I desperately require these decks as exams are approaching.

Has this happened to anyone before? If so, How could I resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance!

I have also tried exporting the lost deck from my iPad, however it will not import into my computer.

Some of this might be misunderstandings about where to find things in Anki.

Where in Anki and AnkiWeb are you looking for that deck? Are you looking at the counters on the main Decks screen? Or are you searching for all cards in the deck through the Browse window (or “Search” in AnkiWeb)?

Similarly here – where are the cards no longer appearing? If they are appearing in the Browse screen, then they are still there.

You’d need to say more about how you’re able to tell they are in a non-existent deck. I’m not sure what you mean by that. They are definitely in a deck, so are you saying that it’s not a deck you created? Did you see them after you created them in the correct deck, and now they are in a different deck?

What type of export are you doing in AnkiMobile? Are you getting an error when you try to import it – and if so, what is the error?

And just some overall things to think about:

  1. Are you strict about making sure that you sync when you open the app AND when you close/leave the app, on every device, every time? It doesn’t sound like you are.
  2. If it turns out that some of your data is actually missing – although I’m not sure yet that it is – you’ve got options for how to fix that.
    • If the collection on one of your iOS devices is complete, you can force a one-way sync from there. That will populate your AnkiWeb account and other devices with that same version of your collection.
    • If the collection you had on your desktop Anki was the complete one, you can restore an automatic backup.

One other thing you might want to try: the tools>check database action may locate the cards if they’re in a missing deck. If that doesn’t help, you can grab your mobile’s collection by forcing a one way sync in the preferences screen of the computer version, then choosing ‘download’.
