Anki deck has fully disappeared

Hi, So I was fiddling around with my decks and moving cards then and all was fine last night and all was fine. But when I booted up Anki this morning I found one of my decks that I was fiddling with is completely gone, all of it. Is there anyway I can get this deck back? it was synced up to ankiweb too if that helps at all. Thanks

Is just the deck missing by name from the Decks list? Or are there actually cards/notes missing?

If it’s just the deck-name –

  • Tools > Check Database – might restore it.
  • If it was a renamed version of the original “Default” deck, and it was emptied of cards, it would hide by default.

The whole deck is missing. Cards, name and everything is gone and there are no remnants. Im using anki on MacOS and I don’t have any backups available but I avidly used to sync my cards to ankiweb idk if that helps at all

Have you searched for the notes/cards as well? Or are you just assuming they are missing because you don’t see the name of the deck?

That’s could only be true if you disabled the automatic backup functionality. Did you do that? If not, you should read the link that was posted above and click through to learn about the many, many backups you have.

Did you consider any of the other things I suggested?

Sorry for not asking that before. Yes I tried the thing you suggested in your last post, it didn’t work sadly.

Regarding wihether or not ive disabled backups, ive had Anki on my MacBook for easily 6-7 years so I honestly couldn’t tell you if I clicked’disable’ on some popup notification for backups or something but to my knowledge I haven’t manually disabled it. But when I check the backp folder its completely empty, However, in forum post titled “How to disable backup features”, a person mentions that there’s no way to ‘completely disable backups’ so does that mean the the backup is somewhere in my computer?

I’ve also searched for the individual cards in the browse section and they’re no where to be seen. The whole deck and its cards have completely vanished. Since I used to sync to ankiweb, could I possibly retrieve them from there? As this wasn’t too long ago when this happened.

There’s no pop-up. It’s on by default, and you can check your settings in Preferences > Backups [another thing that’s explain on the backup page linked above]. There have been developments in the backup functionality, especially 3 years ago in 2.1.50 – but the feature goes back at least to the release of Anki 2.1.0 in 2018, so I think you’ve got it.

Are you looking in the right place – Managing Files - Anki Manual ? Have you gone in through the Anki menus to get to the Backup interface – Files/Anki > Switch Profile > Open Backup.

How long ago was “used to sync”? Have you gone to AnkiWeb and checked to see if they are there – https://ankiweb.net/decks ? What’s the name of the deck, and what’s some text that’s in a note?

Sometimes it’s helpful to start over from the beginning – what fiddling and moving were you doing?
