Decks created in Ankiweb not syncing to Desktop

Ankiweb and the Desktop browser are both showing all of the decks, but the desktop list of decks is missing one of them.

First, make sure your collection is fully synced across all devices. You can do that with a “full round” of syncing – sync device A, then device B, then device A again.

Then try running Tools > Check Database on desktop and see if that deck pops up.

Hi Danika_Dakika,
Thanks for the swift reply.
Sorry it hasn’t helped.
To explain a bit further, everything works well apart from the fact that I can’t add any new Decks in Anki desktop. If I try it doesn’t offer me the empty window, but one of the existing Deck names. If I change it, it overrides the existing Deck. Deleting it again brings back the original name. I can create new decks in Ankiweb and I can see them in the Browser on Anki desktop. It must be a corruption.
I don’t expect you to be able to solve this one, but if you could point me in the direction of someone who might help it would be much appreciated.

That’s normal so far. When you click “Create Deck” (at the bottom of the main Decks list) – the currently selected deck name will be pre-populated to make creating a subdeck easier.

“Overrides” in what way? Is it changing the name of the current deck to that new name? Are all the cards and subdecks still present in the renamed/newly-created deck – or is it empty?

If you’re sure you’re in the “Create Deck” window, and you’re entering a new name that isn’t already used for another deck, it shouldn’t affect any of your other decks.

The only deck that might give unusual behavior around this is the built-in “Default” deck – even if it’s been renamed to something else. Is that what you’re working with?

“Deleting” what, exactly? Deleting that deck you just created by clicking the :gear: icon next to it in the Decks list?

This is the most familiar part of this – deck names showing up in Browse, but not on the Decks list. But it’s pretty much always cured by Check Database. When you ran that, were there any changes reported? Or did it just say “rebuilt and optimized”?

Are you sure the decks aren’t collapsed inside parent decks?

Well, let’s see if anyone else has any ideas. But in the meantime, make sure your desktop Anki is in sync with AnkiWeb – and tell me the full name of a deck this is currently happening with.

It would also be useful to know whether AnkiDroid is showing you the same thing as AnkiWeb and desktop Browse – or the same thing as desktop Decks list.

Hi Danika_Dakika
I’ve just started to go through your excellent suggestions when I found that the problem has righted itself !
Please don’t think that your hard work has been for nothing, because I keep a careful note whatever software I have a problem with, because it can often come back to bite you in the bum.
There’s only one thing that I’ve noticed that could account for the original problem.
I’ve been minimising the 3 windows (deck, browse and Add) so that they all sit on the screen at the same time. I’ve realised that if the Deck window is made too small then some of the lowest deck options don’t appear. Secondly, when I added a deck, if it displayed in place of one of the top 3 it would look as though the original deck had been overwritten, but in fact it had dropped out of sight due to the window being too small. When I then deleted the new name, then the original deck name would pop up into the 3 decks being displayed.
It does seem such a simple stupid error but unless I get a repeat of the original problem I can’t really check.
Once again thank you for your amazing support.
Dave

If there is more of the Decks list that is out of view, the window will have a scroll bar.

FYI, this behavior is not seen on Anki 25.09.2 on Mac desktop. Even with the Decks window sized to the shortest possible height, the bottom row of buttons (Get Shared, Create Deck, Import File) is still seen.

When the Decks window is made shorter, the bottom of the list of decks does get cut off, but a vertical scroll bar appears, allowing the bottom of the list of decks to be seen and accessed.

However, when the Decks window is at the shortest possible height, the list of decks section and vertical scroll bar disappear entirely. All that is left is a very short window with the top row of buttons (Decks, Add, Browse, Stats, Sync) and the bottom row of buttons (Get Shared, Create Deck, Import File).
